Review
Comedy Central's annual celebrity roasts make Dean Martin's classic specials look absolutely touchy-feely by comparison. About as un-PC as you can get, these shows mostly consist of numerous celebrities paying tribute to the guest of honor by trying to out-shock each other in the insult & cruelty department. But, despite the blatant offensiveness of the material, these shows are usually funny as hell. This DVD, featuring an uncensored version of the 2005 roast of the world's only living Barbie doll, Pamela Anderson, is no exception. Anderson's looks and reputation provide perfect fodder for a huge list of personalities to do their worst, often with hilarious results.
As with other installments in this series, the quality of material is based on who's actually appearing. A pretty good batch of celebrities are on-hand for this one, most of whom are armed with a plethora of raunchy boob, slut & penis jokes (you'll hear enough comments about Tommy Lee's enormous wang to last a lifetime). Coming off best are Bea Arthur (whose totally deadpan reading of Anderson's explicit novel is the best part of the show), comedienne Lisa Lampanelli (arguably the meanest of the bunch, though most of her jabs are hurled at other roasters), and host Jimmy Kimmel, whose delivery is often so sly that it takes a second or two to realize how badly he just burned someone. Some not-so-great segments feature Andy Dick (who seems more concerned with shocking people than making them laugh), resident celebrity train-wreck Courtney Love (who makes a complete ass of herself), and ex-husband Tommy Lee (somehow, his reflections on their marriage is sort of icky); he also performs a fairly forgettable song during the proceedings. Much of the time, whether the material is funny or not, some of the insults reach a level of such cruelty that one's amazed that the targets of those insults are able to shrug it off with a laugh or smile; Anderson herself maintains a terrific sense of humor throughout the whole thing. But that's also part of the fun of a disc like this.
Picture and Sound
The picture is offered in standard 1.33:1 fullscreen, and the overall image is comparable to the original Comedy Central broadcast. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Stereo...nothing spectacular, nor does it need to be. It serviceable enough, and there's no distortion or hissing.
Extras
For the most part, the extras included here are sort of amusing, but mostly dispensable. Rehearsal footage consists of Love & Dick going through their routines; 'Red Carpet Interviews' feature most of the roasters (and Pam) either before of after the show; 'uncensored' outtakes include more of the same; 'The Pee Break' shows many of the roasters backstage, along with a few getting tanked up at a bar. Also included a short pieces from other Comedy Central shows, like "South Park," Mind of Mancina" (probably the best show currently on the network) & "Reno 911".
Summary
Fans of Comedy Central's roasts will surely love this uncensored version (though I personally think the roasting of Drew Carry was the most consistently funny). Loaded with vicious insults and raunchy humor, this disc provides quite a few laugh-out-loud moments and compensate for a few of the dull stretches.
