Review

Set in an alternate world from our own, that is familiar yet strangely different, "Wings" is a beautiful example of anime at its best, with mature subject matter and rich characterizations that highlight the film. Lead by director Yamaga, this is a high quality production which received a number of awards, including Best Picture from the Japan Anime, Seiun, and Animage. Although an older film (1987), Manga Video has done a good job in transferring it to DVD.
It centers on Cadet Shiro of the Royal Space Academy, who battles self doubt and ridicule from colleagues in his quest to be somebody. Along the way, he meets a dedicated and devoted woman who helps him with his life decisions, which lead to him becoming the first man in space in this alternate Earth world.

Picture and Sound

Picture-Beautiful anime is rendered on the DVD, with rich colors and sharpness. The drawings are most intricate in some scenes, which build on the characters in the film. A few dust specks are noticeable but not many considering the age of the film. The anamorphic transfer is a great addition to the DVD, including the entire scenes of some spectacular visions of the animators. Sound-A very nice 5.1 Dolby soundtrack highlights the DVD, with excellent dubbing of the voices. The surround effects come through particularly well in the space scenes and take- off sequences. The rich full sound makes it a powerful addition to the incredible artwork, creating an even greater impact on the viewer.

Extras

The disc includes a number of extras, as this is an important film in the world of anime. Directors commentary in featured, along with a deleted scene, an original Royal Space Force promotional film, conceptual artwork and original trailers. It's nice to see them on this DVD along with the usual Manga fan club information and web link.

Summary

A beautiful piece of filmmaking, this feature gives credibility and rich character development to anime. The drawings create an alternate, believable world in its two hour presentation and is highly recommended for anime fans.
