Review

In SERIAL, Martin Mull (MR. MOM) plays Harvey Holroyd, a family man in San Francisco who is bombarded from all sides with the crazy fads of the late ‘70s.  These are the nutty days of open marriages, drug experimentation, religious cults, health food extremes, and psychobabble.  The days when the majority of suits riding bikes to work don’t wear helmets, a psychiatrist jump starts his day with a few snorts of cocaine, and gas tops $1 per gallon!  Madness!


The story is slow and meandering, encompassing Harvey’s separate-the-get-back-together-and-start-all-over-again relationship with his wife, his daughter’s brainwashing by a religious cult that wears purple robes and sells carnations, and a weekend motorcycle gang populated by homosexuals.

Perhaps it’s a case of “you had to be there”, but this film is far from hilarious.  Some scenes may incite a chuckle, but laugh-out-loud guffaws were just not happening.  The supporting cast is bursting, though, and includes Tuesday Weld (LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR), Sally Kellerman (BACK TO SCHOOL), Christopher Lee (RETURN FROM WITCH MOUNTAIN), and Tom Smothers (“THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS SHOW”) as Reverend Spike.
