Review

This political thriller may seem a bit toned down after what has occured in real history regarding the White House. However, the scenario is one that is plausible and the script is done with great intelligence. The stars of the film, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Ava Gardiner, Frederich March, and Edmund O' Brian as a cantakerous Southern Senator , which won him a Golden Globe Award, all have bravo performances and the film is still very entertaining.
A peace loving President has worked out a treaty with the Soviets to dismantle the nuclear arsenals of both countries. The nation is divided into two camps, those that back the peace initiative, and those who don't trust the Soviets or their President . Instead those Americans have rallied around the Chairman of The Joint Chiefs Of Staff (Burt Lancaster). Through his public speeches, it is well known that the general opposes the treaty and is becoming a political force to deal with. This renegade general's close aide is Kirk Douglas, who by way of friends and associates, learns that a planned field emergency exercise involving the President is more than that and a military plot to overthrow the government is being planned by the general. Douglas may be loyal to his genral but realizes that he has a higher duty, to that of the Constitution and immediately tells the President of the plot. The story, written by political novelist Fletcher Knebel, really knows the workings of the government and brings realism to the film's scenario.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen presentation is in black and white-ala-Dr. Stranglove- and is in good shape. Only a few specks of dirt during the credits and a few vertical white lines are noticed during the film. The contrast is good and even and focus is sharp. Dolby digital mono is all that is offered with subtitles in English and French. The dynamic range is acceptable and except for an occasional quick pop or crackle, the soundtrack is claer without distortion. Since most of this film consists of conversations and dialog between characters, the addition of 2 channel or surround sound is not necessary and the power of the words come through with this soundtrack.

Extras

Besides cast and crew bios, the film also contains commentary from John Frankenheimer, director of the movie. It also gives great background information about the government and the scenario of this movie, through a still section entitled Politcal Forces. The disc also contains a theatrical trailer, and a brief note about Edmund O'Brien's Golden Globe award.

Summary

This political thriller is not loaded with action but is more a mental exercise in political thought and reasoning. It is intelligent and thought provoking as to what lengths political foirces will go to achieve their own agendas. The acting is superb, and the screenplay-writing is as well. Watch this one and watch the popcorn fly as people in the audience take sides.

Category: DVD Reviews
"The World's Fastest Indian" is, so far, the best movie I've seen in 2006. It's quirky, funny, charming, suspenseful and manages to be both an exquisite art film and a root-for-the-underdog audience picture at the same time. It also features Anthony Hopkins' best performance of his career (yes, even surpassing "Silence of the Lambs"). It was given a criminally limited release in theaters, but hopefully, it'll find the huge audience it deserves on DVD.
