Review
I will be honest with you. I have no idea what was going on in Shinsengumi. I mean, yeah, I got that a civil war was breaking out in Shogunate Japan, around the same time that Admiral Perry's ships showed up. Some men fought for the Shogun and the traditional way of life, and some men fought for progress and modernism. Toshiro Mifune plays Kondo Isami, the man who founds and then leads the Shinsengumi, a sort of private army for the protection of the Shogun (and coincidentally, the samurai way of life). He has a wife and child that he leaves at home, but visits every now and then, and picks up a mistress along the way that military funds pay for, but unbeknowst to Kondo, so it's all ok, even though the company accountant is executed when the missing money is discovered.
See what I mean? Sometimes I got the impression that Kondo was a good guy, but then he does something bad, so maybe he is a bad guy. Anyway, there is a pretty good fight towards the end of the middle, right about where I was starting to doze off. Other than that, I really cannot say much in favor of watching Shinsengumi. It's long, scenes can be unbearably long or befuddingly short, sometimes the camera just wanders off, much like my brain.

Picture and Sound
It's in that late 60's color film stock that makes everything somewhat dull and monochromatic, even the fountains of blood spewing from men's chests. Sound is adequate, nothing more.
Extras
Some program notes, a slide show of images and posters shots, and then three trailers for other Mifune Production Company films, such as the far superior Samurai Assassin.
Summary
This would not be a samurai film or a Toshiro Mifune film that I would recommend to many people. Other than a pretty kickass battle in the middle of the film, not much here, and what is here is really confusing. I blame the script and the direction.

Joseph is brought to you by the same team that produced Prince Of Egypt, last year's remarkable animated biblical story. The producers of Prince started the Joseph project before the completion of Prince and therefore, the looks of these two features is similar, with the same high quality standards.
