Review

This teenage look at Clark Kent and Superman's early life is a terrific show with lots to offer the viewer. Season Three has a number of excellent shows which expand the relationships of the characters, played by the young cast led with Tom Welling as Clark Kent. Clark's love interest is Lana Lang, played with great depth by Kristin Kreuk. Kent's friends include Sam Jones III as Pete and Allison Mack as Chloe. Michael Rosenbaum plays Lex Luthor, also Clark's friend in the series but their friendship begins to tarnish during this season. Clark's parents are played by veteran actors John Schneider and Annette O'Toole. The man every one loves to hate in this series is Lex's dad, Lionel, interpreted well by John Glover.
Season Three begins with the end of the cliffhanger from Season Two, where Clark, corrupted by Red Kryptonite has left the farm and headed for Metropolis for good times. The first two episodes deal with how Clark finally returns home; Jonathan must make a deal with Jor-El (Superman's real father) to bring him home. Repercussions from this deal are felt throughout the rest of the season by all involved. Lex, who has been left for dead on an island by his bride is rescued but soon has to deal with mental baggage from his past. We learn a lot about Lex during this season of shows. Lana finally makes a break with Clark, as she is tired of his mysterious life and meets a new love interest. Pete feels the burden of knowing Clark's secret and Chloe, ever the probing reporter continues to find strange happenings around the town, including a number of other teens affected by the meteorite shower that brought Clark to Smallville. Some episodes deal with these teens who have similar powers to Clark but are still human. In some ways, there is an X-Men flavor to some of these episodes as the young characters deal with their powers that have evolved. Christopher Reeve makes another appearance, Perry White is introduced (Michael McKeon), and we find out who eventually will become Lois Lane. The season's cliffhanger is extraordinary and leaves many questions unanswered in the best cliffhanger tradition.

Picture and Sound

Colors in the show emphasize the comic book aspect of the show and sets reflect the characters. The Kent farm is rich in earthy , over saturated tones, Clark always wears either red or blue; Luther's environment is one of high tech and sophisticated gray, cold tones. Effects are excellent in the series from Clark's x-ray vision, his heat ray, his strength, and his speed. A couple of scenes depict a speed sequence from Clark's point of view; ala Matrix effects as Clark stops bullets and races to stop destruction. Sound is only in Dolby stereo and should be 5.1 for such an action show. Warner did make the picture widescreen; why not 5.1 surround as well?

Extras

Special features are included on two of the six disc set. Commentary is provided by cast crew on three episodes and a special production feature includes features on series directors, costumers, and special effects wizards. Disc 6 contains more features, including an 8 part Chloe Chronicles and Interactive Comic book. Deleted scenes, DVD-ROM features (Windows only), and a gag reel round out the extras. There is also an Easter egg with Michael Rosenbaum to look for.

Summary

One of the best television series produced today, Smallville Season Three does not disappoint and will have you hooked. Highly recommended.

A Woman Without Love

Category: DVD Reviews

Kitchen sink melodrama as told by Luis Bunuel.

In the filmography of Luis Bunuel, the celebrated Spanish surrealist director, A Woman Without Love, is an amazing leap from the youth gone wild social commentary of Los Olvidados. But within three years of that film, Bunuel was taking a shot at some kind of commercial success by taking on this straightforward adaptation of Guy De Maupassant novel's about deceit and the disintegration of a family.

The plot revolves around Rosario, a sad young woman married to an older man (a decision made for her by her parents) and with a young son whom she dotes on. By happenstance, a young man - Julio - enters their lives. He and Rosario take to each other instantly, falling instantly in love. They begin an affair, but it ends badly when Rosario refuses to leave her husband, not wishing to break up her family.
