Review

Lawrence Weatherhold (Dennis Quaid, TRAFFIC) is a widowed literature professor with two overly intelligent and independent-minded kids (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE’s Ashton Holmes and JUNO’s Ellen Page).  When an accident lands him in the hospital and deprives him of his driving privileges for six months, the Weatherhold home reluctantly opens its doors to Lawrence’s unkempt and practically unemployable adopted brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church, SIDEWAYS).  Lawrence also finds himself making time with Janet (Sarah Jessica Parker, SEX AND THE CITY), the ER doctor who is also a former student.  As unlikely as their pairing seems, the romantic relationship takes off, until it becomes too unwieldy.  To solve their problems and open up to the world and each other, these SMART PEOPLE must get out of their own ways and simply live their lives.


SMART PEOPLE is an intelligently written comedy with well-developed characters.  The film isn’t over-directed and the script is allowed to shine, polished by solid performances all around.  Shot pre-JUNO, Ellen Page’s performance proves the young actress will continue as a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.  Haden Church and Quaid are more than believable as brothers, and Quaid, as a man who wears every punch life has thrown him as a jagged line on his face and an extra pound around his middle, is rather mesmerizing in the central role.

Neither of these episodes are the best examples of what Showtime's great anthology series has to offer horror fans. I've always loved the show because, even though some individual episodes aren't always original (or even scary), and every now and then, some are outstanding. Unfortunately, these two are not. Both are well-made by directors who have done some great work in the past, but the stories are very derivative, and no effort is really made to put a new spin on familiar material.
