Review
Like millions of other Star Trek fans, you may already own this disc from Paramount and now they are releasing this Special Collector's Edition for a very reasonable price. Those looking for a cleaner picture will be disappointed, as it looks the same as on the original disc. The extras however are worth the price alone.
This is a Next Generations film; the first that was produced from the series. However, when the older film series ended writers came up with a unique way to link the two series in this film. Kirk, Scotty, and Chekov are featured in the opening 15 minutes of the film but most of the film is the Next Generation cast. Kirk is lost is a space energy wave known as the Nexus, which is highly destructive to everything in its path but has the power to absorb you into a heaven like state where all your dreams come true. Dr. Soran, played by Malcolm McDowell is obsessed with getting back to the Nexus, as he was pulled out of it by the Enterprise and Kirk 80 years earlier. His plan is to explode a star and push the Nexus to him on a barren planet, even though it means killing billions of people in the star system when the star explodes. Picard figures out his plan and tries to stop him by entering the Nexus and recruiting Kirk to help him. Cast members from Next Generation are prominently featured in the subplot of the film, with large parts going to Data and Geordi, as Data deals with a fused emotion chip which can not be removed. Gates McFadden as the Dr. and Michael Dorn as Worf have relatively minor roles in this film. This is really a Picard film from the opening scene as we learn more about him and his family. When he enters the Nexus, we also learn about his hidden desire for family and belonging.
Extras
The extras on this two disc set include audio commentary by Brannon Braga and Ron Moore during the film, and text commentary pop ups from Michael and Denise Okuda. The menu graphics have also been redone, with motion graphics for each selection. Disc Two is a monster and worth the price of the entire disc set. 7 major sections include a tribute to Star Trek ship designer Matt Jeffries, the Star Trek lineage, Captain Picard's family album, and creating Star Trek weapons (knives which are unique works of art). Production specials include writers discussing Kirk and Picard together, shooting in the Valley of Fire, and the massive Stellar Cartography set in the film. The Enterprise crashing is broken down into another production special, and deleted scenes include the original ending (which was not received well), Orbital Skydiving, which was the original opening sequence, and an extended Christmas with the Picards. There are also storyboards and a production gallery as well as trailers. Fans will be very entertained by these specials.
Summary
Other than less than stellar picture quality, this new special edition of "Star Trek-Generations" lives up to its name, with hours of extra features and commentary and an additional DTS soundtrack to rattle the windows. Retail price is reasonable and those who own the first disc and are true Trekkies will want the additional material included. Paramount knows a good franchise and has padded this disc with the kind of material fans want.

Featured Review
Larry King, whose about as much an authority on films as my ten-year-old daughter, is quoted right on the cover of this disc, touting that it's one of the greatest sports movies ever made. Then again, when hasn't Mr. King unabashedly gushed over nearly every movie he's ever seen? While Friday Night Lights is not one of the greatest sports movies ever made, it's still really damned good (and if you aren't familiar with the true story on which it is based, sometimes surprising), with yet-another great lead performance by Billy Bob Thornton.
