Review

The third season of "Star Trek-The Next Generation", brought in new writers and a new executive producer fro the series and contains some very well received shows, including the first season ending cliff-hanger involving Captain Picard and The Borg. Packaging for this third season is the same well laid out package as the first two from Paramount; a multi-foldout book that contains the seven discs, an accompanying booklet which fits neatly into an outer shell for book shelf storage. All the discs contain four one hour episodes except disc seven which contains two and also the extras for the disc set. There were no character changes other than the return of Dr. Crusher as the ship's Doctor.
Heres the episode breakdown for season three: Disk One: Evolution-Over worked Ensign Crusher accidentally lets loose some developing life forms; his mother returns as Dr. for the Enterprise. The Survivors-The Enterprise comes across the only two survivors of a planet that has been wiped out of all life. The Ensigns Of Command-The Enterprise must evacuate some colonists from a planet who refuse to leave. Who Watches The Watchers-The crew must disguise themselves as "locals" to a society that is Vulcan like but has not developed technology yet and the crew must obey the Prime Directive. Disk Two: The Bonding-A child who has lost his mother aboard the Enterprise begins to "imagine" his parent through his will of longing for her. The Enemy-Geordie is stranded on a planet with a Romulan and they both need each other to survive. Booby Trap-The Enterprise gets caught in a space puzzle that has already killed a crew of another starship. The Price-Negotiations for a stable wormhole go on aboard the Enterprise and Troi falls for one of the negotiators. Disk Three: The Vengeance Factor-Riker becomes involved in a negotiator's helper, who has a deep seated revenge mission to destroy one of the chief negotiators. The Defector-A Romulan general is taken aboard warning of an impending Romulan invasion plan. The Hunted-A prisoner escapes to the Enterprise where he leads the crew on a chase around the ship. Guest stars include James Cromwell. The High Ground-Terrorists on a planet kidnap Dr. Crusher to treat their members who are suffering from condition caused by their experimental transporting system. Disk Four: Deja Q-"Q" has his powers taken away and must learn to live as a human aboard the Enterprise. A Matter Of Perspective-Riker is put on trail for the death of a scientist and the trial is seen through the different testimonies presented. Yesterday's Enterprise-A phenomenal episode considered one of the all time best includes the return of Denise Crosby as Lt. Tasha Yar as the Enterprise meets its namesake from the past and must "fix" history. The Offspring-Data creates another android he considers his child who takes on the form of a human female. Disk Five: The Sins Of The Father-Worf goes home to defend his father's name against a Klingon tribunal. Allegiance-Picard is mysteriously trapped along with other beings from other starships in an observation holding area while a replacement captain has eyes for Dr. Crusher. Captain's Holiday-Picard goes to a resort planet where he gets involved with a mysterious woman and time travelers. Tin Man-A temperamental Betazoid man with extraordinary powers comes aboard to communicate with a large spaceship which seems to be organic. Disk Six: Hollow Pursuits-An emotionally insecure crewman becomes addicted to his fantasy life on the holodeck. The Most Toys-Data is captured by a space "collector", who wants him for his collection. Sarek-Spock's father. the most highly respected Vulcan of all time, comes aboard to negotiate a treaty but Picard soon discovers he is suffering from a Vulcan disease which makes his emotions come out. Manage A Troi-Troi, Riker, and her mother are kidnapped by a pair of scheming Ferengi. A comic gem with Picard quoting Shakespeare and Majel Barrett returning as Troi's mother. Disk Seven: Transfigurations-The crew rescue a being that has the ability to heal itself and has no recollection of what happened to him. The Best Of Both Worlds-Part One-Riker must make a decision on whether to leave the Enterprise for his own command and Picard is taken by the Borg and becomes one of them in this cliffhanger.

Picture and Sound

Picture-An excellent fullscreen picture from Paramount is consistent throughout all the episodes. No dirt or other defects were noticed in the viewing. Special effects are up to par with some of the best for the time period, using different models for the Enterprise for shots and computer generated graphics when necessary. Sound-A 5.1 Dolby soundtrack adds greater depth than you could get from watching these episodes on cable. The deep rumble of the engines heard on the bridge and on other parts of the ship are totally lost on normal television viewing and the greatest strength of these DVD episode sets is the sound which is outstanding.

Extras

Like the other sets before this one, a large set of extras is included. There is a general overview of the third season with interviews with cast and the new executive producer and his team of new writers of the series, plus the actors viewpoints on their evolving characters, and their favorite episodes from Season Three. There is also a special feature on the production of particular episodes from the crew's point of view.

Summary

This DVD set is one that Star Trek fans will appreciate and enjoy, much like the other two also available. High production values and memorable episodes make this a strong package.

Confidence

Category: DVD Reviews
I had sort of a ho-hum attitude upon receiving this disc, and popped it in my DVD player with more of a sense of obligation than true interest. But "Confidence" is one of the reasons being a DVD reviewer is so fun...coming upon terrific movies I wouldn't normally have selected at my local Blockbuster to watch for my own amusement. This is a really fun film, the way "Get Shorty" and "The Sting" are fun ("Confidence" is sort of a hybrid of both). This crime thriller about a tight-knit group of grifters sports a great cast, a sharp script and good direction.
