Review
"Klingon" is the fourth 4-DVD set of "Star Trek" episodes focusing on a specific theme, this time being the Federations nemeses/uneasy allies, the Klingons. While this set in the "Fan Collective" series, in my opinion, isn't quite on par with "Borg" or "Time Travel" (the latter still being the best), this is still the best way for budget-conscious Trekkies to invest in some classic episodes without shelling-out cash for entire season boxed sets.
All five incarnations of "Star Trek" are represented in this set, starting chronologically with one of the few truly intriguing "Enterprise" episodes, in which the Federation first encounters the Klingons (after one of their ships crash-lands on Earth during a heated battle with another alien race). Ironically, what's interesting about this episode is the growing resentment humans feel toward the patronizing Vulcans, who more-or-less treat them as children (perhaps yet-another parable of other nations' resentment toward American nosiness). Next are two episodes from the original series, including one of the most popular with fans, "The Trouble with Tribbles." Disc two features all "Next Generation" episodes, including the two-part "Redemption," which is one of the best of that series. I never liked "Deep Space Nine," but this set does feature one of the few truly amusing episodes, a de-facto sequel, "Trials and Tribble-ations," which ingeniously places the DS9 cast within the decidedly 60's environment of the original classic episode. "Voyager," the third spin-off of the original series, ran hot and cold, but was infinitely better than "DS9," and the Klingon-related episode included here ("Barge of the Dead") is pretty good, though not as intriguing as some of the others in this set.
Picture and Sound
Obviously, the picture quality varies from episode to episode. TOS contains the most scratches and artifacts, but for a series pushing 40, the image is still pretty good. The lone "Enterprise" episode is presented in widescreen, and features the best transfer of the 10 episodes included. The audio for all 10 episodes are rendered in 5.1 & 2.0 Dolby Digital, and they sound terrific.
Extras
Brannon Braga & Rick Berman provide the only audio commentary for the "Enterprise" episode, and while die-hard Trekkies should enjoy it, it isn't as much fun as the 'pop-up' text commentaries Michael & Denise Okuda provide for 5 episodes.
Summary
"Kilngon" is a fun and sometimes humorous boxed set, featuring some of the most memorable episodes from "The Next Generation", as well as a few classics from the original series & "DS9". It may not have the continuity found in the complete season sets, but this set is a nifty way to a lot of episodes featuring the nasty-but-loveable Klingons all at once. Highly recommended for those who haven't invested in the season boxed sets.
