"Stardust" is based on a graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and boasts a very talented cast that includes Clare Danes, Sienna Miller, Robert DeNiro and a gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer. There are also small roles for Rupert Everett and Peter O'Toole, with narration by Ian McKellen. Many critics loved this film but I had a few problems with it.
The story takes place in the 19th century village of Wall, where a stone wall divides the village and England from a magical place full of witches, magic and sorcery called Stormhold. In the village , a young man jumps the fence and has a trist with a princess and soon has a bundle of joy on his doorstep. Fast forward 18 years and the magical kingdom's old king (O'Toole) is about to die and his off spring are killing each other off to be in line for the crown. Tristan ( the baby boy grown up played by Charlie Cox) loves the village hottie (played by Sienna Miller) but must prove his love by capturing a star and bringing it back to her. Just as the old king dies, a star falls from the heavens and crashes in Stormhold and Tristan is off to retrieve it for his love. The star, played by Danes is also being hunted by a trio of witches, led by Michelle Pfeiffer, who will cut out her heart to keep from aging. As they journey together, Tristan and the star begin to like each other. Guess what happens? It's a fairy tale and very predictable. I found the production of the film to be less then spectacular with the script really bouncing around too much. Performances were also a mixed bag; Michelle Pfeiffer had a wonderful time playing the wicked witch but I did not find much chemistry between the two lovers, Danes and Charlie Cox, and I thought Robert DeNiro sunk to a new low portraying a gay, cross dressing pirate captain overly concerned about his image. This is the same man who did "Raging Bull"?

Picture and Sound

The dvd's picture had luscious darks (a lot of key scenes are at night) but I thought the daylight scenes seemed a bit washed out and lacked some contrast. Effects were state of the art. The Dolby digital 5.1 soundtrack also seemed a bit shallow in it's delivery; I expected a better mix from a magical fantasy.

Extras

The one disc had few extras; a making of feature, blooper reel, and deleted scenes. No commentary. Very disappointing.

Summary

In conclusion, I really wanted to like this film but it tried too hard to be the next Princess Bride. If you make a tongue in cheek, fairy tale romance you will get the comparisons. It left me feeling disappointed in the end, with too much predictability and stiff performances from the lead couple. While the film had some good moments, I'd only recommend a rent on this one.

This Dreamworks and Sci-Fi channel production is a monster mini-series that will take you at least a week to watch. Much of the storyline content is taken from the "mythology" of UFO incidents dating from 1945 to the present, as seen through the experiences of three families who become intertwined in the UFO story. A relatively young cast is featured in the major roles including Joel Gretsch, Tina Holmes, Heather Donahue (from Blair Witch Project), Adam Kaufman, Catherine Dent, Ryan Hurst, Chad Morgan, Eric Close, and Dakota Fanning. Fanning is setting a new standard for child actors with this and other recent performances. Michael Moriarty, movie veteran and from the "Law and Order" television series plays a small role in the opening episode. Matt Frewer (Max Headroom) joins the cast in later episodes.
