Review

When Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) returns with his men from a tour of duty, all he wanted to do was bring them home safe and sound to their families.  But their lives have been changed irrevocably during active combat, and King struggles to help his men keep it together as they reintegrate into society.  Then, when King receives orders that he is being shipped back for another tour, he embarks on a journey that will put him at odds with his commanding officer, his fellow soldiers, and his long time friends.


Rounding out the cast are Channing Tatum (SHE’S ALL THAT), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (THE LOOKOUT), and Abbie Cornish (ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE).  The title refers to “the retention of soldiers in the service beyond their expected term.  Using a loophole in soldiers’ military contracts to prohibit servicemen and women from retiring once their required term of service is complete.  Also widely known as a ‘Back Door Draft.’”  I cannot personally attest to the authenticity of STOP-LOSS, but there is ample evidence that director Kimberly Peirce (BOYS DON’T CRY) went to great lengths to tell a story that was truthful and inspired by reality.  What she presents is a story that is at once startling and patriotic, enraging and inspiring.
