I remember seeing "Waxwork" when it was first released, thinking it had the makings of a cult classic, and director Anthony Hickox was destined for greater things. I was wrong on both counts. "Waxwork" and its sequel, "Waxwork II: Lost in Time," seem to have been all-but-forgotten by all but a few die-hard fans. As for Hickox... his only real notable work since then has been helming the third "Hellraiser" movie. That's too bad, because these two films, now available on a single disc from Artisan, are probably the best horror comedies to come along since "Gremlins." They simultaneously spoof and pay homage to countless other horror classics, providing a ton of laughs (and a few chills). Despite their low budgets, both films are skillfully made, featuring clever dialogue voiced by a cast that's better than the usual run-of-the-mill horror ensemble (including many famous faces in extended cameos).
