Review

This African adventure tale stars Gene Tierney (love that overbite!), Bruce Cabot, George Sanders, Harry Carey Sr., and small part by Dorothy Dandridge as a native girl. Directed by Henry Hathaway, it is one of those British empire films, set in Kenya. With the backdrop of World War II, there are also an evil Nazi spy to overcome.
Tierney plays the beautiful daughter of a Northern African prince, who has returned to take over her father's duties in trading in Kenya. Tierney never looked better than in her native costumes. Bruce Cabot is in charge of the British operations in Kenya, which is considered lacking in leadership by British authorities so they send in cad George Sanders to set things straight. When the three meet, Tierney learns of a conspiracy to take over the trade routes established by her father for the German's war effort and she joins in with the two British officers to defeat it.

Picture and Sound

Picture-The "restored" picture still has a few dust spots but most of the picture is cleaned up well, with rich contrast in the black and white film. The picture is sharp and distinct with no out of focus reels or flaws. The country is beautifully photographed and impresses upon the audience the vastness of Africa and varying terrain. The film received four Academy Award nominations; for cinematography, best score, and two for art direction. Sound-Dolby digital cleans up the mono soundtrack of the film, although it still suffers from a bit of distortion from its age. This is more a result from the technology of the time than from the source material.

Extras

VCI always has interesting supplementary information on their discs about a film and its stars and this disc is no different. Included are multi-screened fact filled bios of the main stars and a photo gallery of Tierney and Cabot in costume from the film's studio's vaults.

Summary

A good example of how Hollywood started in early with the war effort, this film is gorgeous to look at, has classic performances from the cast and an adventurous plot. Restored digitally, the film looks very good on DVD.
