Review

2007 is likely to go down as the year of Judd Apatow. In June, "Knocked Up" (directed by Apatow) was released. It quickly became a beloved sleeper hit and rightly so. A few months later, "Superbad" (which Apatow produced) came out and had audiences roaring with laughter. Now, the legions of fans (and those select few who have yet to see it) can watch the unrated cut of "Superbad" in a extra filled 2 disc set.
The story in a nutshell involves two high school teenagers (Seth and Evan) trying to get a date (and possibly more) with two women they desperately like before parting ways for college. Wanting to impress the ladies at a party, Seth and Evan enlist the help of their friend Fogell to get booze for them. Armed with a fake ID that reads McLovin, Fogell attempts to get booze but instead winds up traveling along with two cops he befriends. What follows is a series of crazy adventures during one crazy night. Unlike most modern high school films, "Superbad" is a mostly true to life teen film. The language, as raunchy and obscene as it is, is an accurate depiction of how teens talk. As I was a teenager not so long ago, I can honestly say that the vast majority of slightly immature teens did indeed curse up a storm and talk about women and alcohol non-stop. Additionally, I found that "Superbad" was one of the few teen flicks that tackled the subject of losing friends perfectly. I think everyone can relate to having a friend go off to college or losing contact with them or worse (never seeing them again). It's a symbol of the end of innocence and the start of a new life. Relatability aside, "Superbad" primarily works because of the cast. Jonah Hill (who also appeared in "Knocked Up") and Michael Cera ("Arrested Development") are likeable leads, but they are overshadowed by the supporting cast. To me, the real laughs come from Fogell AKA McLovin and Officer Michaels and Slater (played by "Knocked Up" star Seth Rogen and SNL vet Bill Hader). Rogen and Hader's back and forth banter was hysterical and the two have real chemistry together. How can you not crack up when the cops stop the party or when Officer Slater cries out "McLovin! Whyyyyyyy?" when McLovin runs away? I'd love to see a spin-off off with those two characters. As for Fogell, how can you not like him? Plasse deserves a supporting actor nomination! Who else could possibly play that role?

Picture and Sound

I have to say the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen picture quality is surprisingly sharp. It may not be up to Blu-Ray quality, but it's way above average for DVD quality. The English 5.1 Dolby Digital is equally impressive. The dialogue and the catchy soundtrack are clear as can be.

Extras

Disc 1: * Trailers for: "Walk Hard," "The Brothers Solomon," "Across The Universe," "Hostel Part 2," "Feel The Noise," "Resident Evil 3," "Seinfeld Season 9," "I Know Who Killed Me," "Life Of Brian," "Talladega Nights," "Reign Over Me," "Vantage Point," "Spider-Man 3," and titles coming to Blu-Ray. * A commentary track by Judd Apatow and his daughter Maude, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Michael Cera, Greg Mottola, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. The track is very playful. The group blabbers on non-stop and are constantly getting sidetracked by talking about dirty jokes, curse words, Maude covering her eyes and ears, etc. There are some fun tidbits though, such as finding out that KG himself (Kyle Gass) read for the one of the cops. Disc 2: * A scene from 2008's "Pineapple Express." I would have rather seen a trailer to get a sense of what the movie will be like. * "Vag-Tastic Voyage"- A 1 1/2 minute fake porno clip. * A 4 1/2 minute gag reel. The highlight was seeing Bill Hader crack up during his scenes. * "Everyone Hates Michael Cera" is a fake documentary in which the cast and crew talk about how unpleasant it is to work with Cera. * 3 auditions. Michael Cera reads for Evan, Jonah Hill reads for Seth, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse reads for Fogell. * 2 table reads. One from 2002 with Seth Rogen reading for the part of Seth and a 2006 table read. * A 4 minute extra titled "Line-O-Rama" in which actors deliver alternate lines from the one that is scripted. * 12 1/2 minutes of deleted and extended scenes. My favorite bits include Seth's Johnny Cash impression, and The Cops ranting about their job. * "Cop Car Confessions" is a collection of 13 sketches in which various celebrities like Chris Kattan, Kristen Wiig, and Justin Long are in the back of the cops (Rogen and Hader) car. * A 13 minute "Making Of Superbad" featuring behind the scenes footage and Rogen and Goldberg discussing the script. * Dancing title sequence. * 4 voicemails from Jonah to Michael. * "Snakes On Jonah" is an odd little bit in which crew members annoy Jonah with reptiles he's afraid of. * TV Safe Lines- A look at how the actors have to change their lines to make them TV friendly. Censorship-yuck! * On Set Diaries featuring Jonah Hill giving a behind the scenes tour, lots of joking around, etc. 17 1/2 minutes. * "The Music Of Superbad" (13 mins.) takes a gander at the funky recording sessions. * "Press Junket Meltdown" is another fake interview session with director Edgar Wright pissing off Jonah Hill.

Summary

Even though I still have a few films left to see, I'm confident in saying that "Superbad" is one of the ten best films of 2007. Buy it today.
