Review

"Sydney White" had the potential to be a really fun film. Starring the talented Amanda Bynes in the title role, the film is a rough parody of "Snow White" and "Revenge of the Nerds" rolled into one. Unfortunately, the milk toast writing and casting (with a few exceptions) make this film a yawner, with no really memorable moments. At times, I felt like I was watching a college edition of "Zoe 101".
Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is a tomboy raised by her construction worker father after her mother's death, who gets accepted to the state university. Sydney yearns to join her mothers' sorority but finds out soon that the sorority chapter president Witchburn (Sara Paxton) doesn't want her and plots a scheme to humiliate her during rush week. However, handsome fraternity president Tyler Prince (Matt Long) is smitten with Sydney, much to the dismay of Witchburn. After being rejected by the sorority, Sydney goes to live with the outcasts on campus, who are known as the seven dorks, for various reasons. You can probably predict what happens after this.

What bothers me the most about this film is the almost total waste of Amanda Bynes' talent. Bynes is known for her "Lucy" like humor; physical gags and character driven parts. She displayed these talents in her first film outing in "Big Fat Liar" but she is totally devoid of this in this film. She simply plays a soft spoken, good natured girl, who is a bit clumsy with boys. The rest of the cast is also ho-hum; John Schneider plays the good natured father (a part he played for years in Smallville), Sara Paxton tries her best to be evil but really doesn't pull it off, and the seven dorks I just did not find to be that funny. It has all been done before and better.

Picture and Sound

I have no complaints about the technical aspects of the dvd. Picture was sharp and presented in 2.35:1 widescreen with Dolby digital 5.1 sound.

Extras

A short bunch of extras are included , such as a gag reel, some deleted scenes, and some very short promo videos with cast members about each other. The highlight is the one about the hand puppet used by one of the dorks to vocalize in the film.

Summary

Amanda Bynes deserves much better than this. While she may be trying to get into more mature roles, this piece of pablum doesn't do much for her career as it doesn't show her true talent as a comedian. The film's only appeal is the Snow White parody , which is a clever idea but isn't enough to save this predictable film. Rent it first.
