“Teeth” is a missed opportunity.

“Teeth” revolves around a young high school woman named Dawn who is very proud to be a virgin. She is so proud in fact, that she delivers speeches to students about never having sex before marriage. However, Dawn’s life soon becomes turned upside down when she falls for a friend (Tobey). One day, after a passionate make-out session, Tobey winds up forcing himself upon Dawn only to have his genitals bitten off by her vagina dentata (AKA teeth). From here on out, Dawn’s descent into murder and chaos begins.

From the trailers and promos, “Teeth” looked like it would be a semi-serious cautionary sex horror tale, but that was simply false advertising. In reality, the movie plays like a campy old school female empowerment horror romp with plenty of gore, corny music cues, and hints of a nuclear mutation. Personally, I felt the story shouldn’t have been so straight forward. With such a promising premise, writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein could have gone to town by delving deeply into this age old myth. Instead, all we get is a story of corruption and revenge (more or less).

Picture and Sound

The widescreen picture quality is grainy in spots, but it generally looks pleasant for an indie film.

The Dolby Digital audio track was solid. The dialogue and the music were perfectly audible.

Extras

* Trailers for "Diary Of The Dead," "Waz," "Awake," "Storm Warning," and a trailer and TV spot for "Teeth."
* 5 deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Mitchell Lichtenstein.
* A 29 minute Behind-The-Scenes featurette with interviews and discussions about the plot and themes.
* A frightfully boring and monotone commentary track by Mitchell Lichtenstein reveals very little aside from some behind-the-scenes tidbits.

I love McDonald's. No, it ain't the greatest food on Earth, but as junk food goes, it's edible enough, and you always know what you're gonna get. Disaster movies are the cinematic equivalent of McDonald's...fast food, meant to be quickly consumed, enjoyed and forgotten about. People don't watch disaster movies thinking they're gonna see another "Schindler's List." They watch for the same reason they go to McDonald's. In that respect, "The Core" is as good as any other disaster movie ever made, with the exact same ingredients...lots of destruction, huge special effects, stupid dialogue, cardboard characters and a silly story. But that's what makes this movie fun...it's utter predictability. After all, would a Big Mac still be a Big Mac if they suddenly decided to add tomatoes?
