Review

With "The Sopranos" and "Carnivale" off the air, the intelligent and thoughtful drama "Tell me You Love Me" is currently the best show on HBO.
"Tell Me You Love Me" revolves around 4 different couples whose lives are somehow interconnected. There's a married couple with kids (Dave and Katie) who can't seem to have sex anymore, an engaged couple (Jamie and Hugo) who are taking time apart because they can't be faithful to each other, a couple (Palek and Carolyn) that is conflicted about having a child, and a married sex therapist (May) who counsels all three couples.

While "Tell Me You Love Me" can be uncomfortable, tragic, dark, and heartbreaking, I firmly believe that's why it is so appealing. Instead of shying away from subjects, the show digs deep into the complications of love, relationships, parenthood, marriage, etc. All of the stories (especially Dave and Katie and Palek and Carolyn's) are not only provocative and intelligent, but they are realistic. There's no question that many couples experience the very same problems in this day and age.

I also admire the fact that the first season is essentially one continuos episode that focuses entirely on characterization. I can't wait to see what happens with these characters in season two.

Picture and Sound

The 16:9 widescreen picture quality is not very attractive. The picture is very grainy and the show looked better when it aired on HBO.

The Dolby Digtial 5.1 audio track is TOO quiet, but it's by no means the worst track I've heard.

Extras

* Commentary track- episode 1 by Cynthia Mort. Mort is quite talkative here as she brings up topics like casting, themes, scripting and the show's original title.
* Commentary track on episode 4 with Tim DeKay and Ally Walker, episode 7 with Michelle Borth and Luke Farrell Kirby and episode 8 with Adam Scott and Sonya Walger. All of the actors and actresses are quite lively in these tracks as they analyze their characters. It's also fun to hear how different they sound compared to their on screen personas.
