Review

A classic good guy vs. bad guy documentary tale that takes place in the world of competitive arcade gaming.
"The Kong Of Kong" focuses on two adult gamers (Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell) who are vying to get the high score on the original Donkey Kong game. Steve is a teacher/family man who is competing in hope that he can change his history of bad luck, while Billy is a full of himself gamer who thinks he cannot be beaten. Can Steve defy the odds and beat Billy? Even if you aren't into gaming or geeky lifestyles, this is a highly entertaining and insightful documentary about the desire to win. Both Steve and Billy are utterly fascinating subjects that are deeper and more complex than any character a screenwriter wrote last year. They are so fascinating, in fact, that Hollywood is making a film about the two. Of course, why would anyone see a fictional film when you can watch the real thing? I don't think any amount of money can recreate the shady, secretive, possibly cheating Billy Mitchell. Billy and Steve aren't the only stars, however. The referee/scorekeeper, Billy's weasly friend Brian, and the peculiar Mr. Awesome are all equally deserving of their own documentaries as well.

Picture and Sound

The 1.85:1 widescreen picture varies in quality. The archival footage is obviously rough looking, while the footage shot for the documentary looks fairly clean. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound track is suitable for a documentary, but sometimes the dialogue can be hard to hear. Thankfully, subtitles are given in certain scenes so that we do not miss anything being said. A Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track has also been included.

The group talk about how the docu came together and how the original premise was something different. Some great stories here. * Commentary track by Chris Carle and Jon M. Gibson- The two crack jokes and basically point out details and talk about them. An empty track. Listen to the other one instead.

Summary

"The King Of Kong- A Fistful Of Quarters" is the single best film of 2007. Run out and buy it.

Black crime is explored from a black perspective, and we see that there are always multiple sides to every story.
