Review

"The Savages" is a well acted but unrewarding story about family and mortality.

The plot: After their father’s girlfriend dies, two quarreling siblings (Wendy and Jon) must find a new home for their dying father. In addition, Wendy and Jon must try and cope and deal with this difficult newfound situation while also pondering their own mortality. 

It’s kind of sad that both Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman give award wotthy performances here and yet they can’t save this confused mess of a film. Much like Wendy and Jon’s inability to move forward in life, Tamara Jenkins screenplay simply wanders aimlessly as if clueless as where to go next. While this confusion about how to move on may indeed be the point, it doesn’t hide the fact that the screenplay’s tone is all over the map. Is it a comedy? Is it an eccentric family drama? Is it a human interest story? Is it a reflective, personal story about aging and death? Who knows!
