Review

Though I wouldn’t hold it against you, you shouldn’t mistake this film with Halle Berry’s prior tear-filled, Oscar-winning role in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. While both films deal with a mother dealing as best she can with a heavy burden of lost family, Things We Lost in the Fire lags miles behind Monster’s Ball in subtlety.

However, all the heavy-handedness that weighs and drags upon you throughout the film is quickly buoyed up by some truly artful cinematography. Every moment of pain and doubt-- every grimace, frown or sly glance is rendered ten times as “honest” and powerful than any of the award-studded and capable actors of the film could muster.

"Norbit" could very well be Eddie Murphy's worst movie ever. Yeah, "Pluto Nash" was awful...REALLY awful...but at least both fans and critics saw it for what it was, and it tanked at the box office . "Norbit" was inexplicably a box office hit, which either says a lot for the Dreamworks promo department, or very little about the taste of most moviegoers. What's worse is this came out right after Murphy's stunning turn in "Dreamgirls" (some industry wags even speculated it hurt his chances to win an Oscar). Here's hoping he actually made "Norbit" before "Dreamgirls", and is now convinced he no longer needs to do crap like this. The only reason "Norbit" doesn't rate an F is that Rick Baker's make-up work is pretty impressive.
