Review

The Navy calls their elite pilot training program the Fighter Weapons School; the pilots call it TOP GUN.  After a close call in the air leaves the top spot open, pilots Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise, ALL THE RIGHT MOVES) and Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards, REVENGE OF THE NERDS) find themselves on the fast track to Fightertown USA.  But Maverick is a rule breaker and finds himself butting heads with his fellow pilots and instructors, all while getting tangled up in a romance with civilian instructor Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis, WITNESS) and simultaneously searching for the answers behind his pilot father’s mysterious disappearance.


Although it was made in the 80’s, TOP GUN is not a title that immediately comes to mind when I think of iconic 80’s films, so it seemed a little out of place in the array of releases repackaged by Paramount. What there is of a story is poorly developed and mediocre; the film relies heavily on long training and dogfight sequences that are difficult to follow (wait, who was chasing who again?) and leaning towards boring in their mechanics.  On top of that, TOP GUN’s love story of the leads falls flat; while on the other hand the brief interludes between Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan are absolutely charming.  On the flipside, the cast is absolutely top notch and includes Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, and a quick “OhmyGod was that Nate Petrelli?” moment for Adrian Pasdar.
