Review

Tracey Berkowitz (Ellen Page, JUNO), 15-years-old, is “just a normal girl who hates herself.”  When her younger brother goes missing while under her supervision, we are plummeted into the rabbit-hole of Tracey’s mind as she desperately searches for him.  The line between fantasy and reality blurs as Tracey explores thoughts and feelings on the new boy at school, her family life, and her frustration with the world.


THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS is visually unlike anything you’ve seen.  (Although Chris Terrio’s HEIGHTS does come to mind as far as visual style goes, if I’m remembering correctly Terrio’s film uses the multi-paneled screen to a much lesser degree.  From what I can tell on the IMDb, the term is actually “Mondrian multi-frame compositions.”)  It plays like a visual collage, a representation of a young girl’s mind, with multiple neurons firing a kaleidoscope of images simultaneously or in rapid succession.  The film is both strange and beguiling, but the barrage of the visual style doesn’t work in a feature film.  (If, at a 77-minute running time, THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS can be termed such.)  I would have been able to appreciate the artistry more had the film been presented as a short of no more than 30 minutes.

I do think the “Trace: Re-Fragmented” aspect included on the DVD is a phenomenal thing, and wish that more independent filmmakers and independent production companies would do more initiatives such as this to encourage other filmmakers.

Picture and Sound

Picture and sound are average, clean and clear enough. I don’t have a very large screen on which I view DVDs, so I would be interest in hearing from a member whether the film plays well on a larger screen, given the unique visual presentation.

* The Single Frame. A selection of images on set and behind the scenes by photographer Matt O’Sullivan.
* Tracey: Re-Fragmented. In October 2007, director Bruce McDonald launched “Trace: Re-Fragmented,” a re-editing initiative surrounding the release of the feature. Raw footage of the film was made available for internal users to download and re-edit their own related projects such as music videos, new trailers, etc. The re-editing initiative also had a competitive element, with Bruce McDonald and his editors selecting the best from the projects submitted. Includes projects by winner Joel Norn, and short-listed entries by Dave McKellar, Judah Purcell, Katie Chipperfield, and Jason Gilmore.
