Review
Much like the oversaturated American series Law & Order, this British series takes viewers every step along in a crime – from its execution and aftermath to the police involvement and then eventually to trial.
What separates this from its U.S. partner is the depth with which the viewer is able to get involved with the personalities and the procedures involved. Each episode is at least 90 minutes long, with no breaks for commercials necessary, so each case plays out more like a full-length film and its sequel.
Another key difference – and one of the most interesting aspects about this show – is its inventive use of the TV screen space. During some key moments in a particular case, the screen is divided up into squares of varying sizes, with each one taking a different viewpoint of either the court proceedings (which in the second episode allowed you to watch the harrowing testimony by a crime victim and the expressionless face of the man accused of perpetrating it) or actions that are happening parallel to one another in time but in different locations. It allow for a depth in the storytelling that so many shows of this ilk miss out on and brings a great deal of information at the viewer at once. It is a DVD set that practically demands multiple viewings.
There should also be special notice given to the writer and creator of the series Lynda La Plante (also the creator of the brilliant Prime Suspect) for her deft ability to weave the story arc of lives of the police men and women (with the barristers, the only constant figures in the show) in between the often grisly details of the cases they are tracking. Their personal lives tend to take a back seat to the procedures of police work, but that she is able to humanize these figures of authority and add shades of color to their personalities that sneak up on you throughout is something that far too many TV writers should be taking notes on.
Picture and Sound
The sound is decent but this is a disc that could have used some subtitling as some of the regional accents used by characters can often be indecipherable to American ears.
The picture is gritty and deep, but also bears the imprint of having been filmed and processed for TV broadcast. Good, but not spotless.
Extras
An interview with creator Lynda La Plante
A glossary of British court and law terms

Featured Review
For the longest time, I thought I was the only guy who remembered this show. During numerous discussions of classic TV shows with friends and co-workers over the years, anytime I brought up "Sledge Hammer," I'd be greeted with blank stares from those who had no idea what the hell I was talking about. Not really surprising, since the show was undeservedly regulated to the barren nether-regions of ABC's prime time schedule in the mid-80s, only to die a virtually unnoticed death after only two seasons. Needless to say, I wanted to cry tears of joy when Anchor Bay released the first season on DVD last year; not only was I finally able to own my favorite forgotten show ever, it was ample evidence that I wasn't alone in my love for it Now Anchor Bay has followed up that great set with a collection of the second and final season, along with another big batch a extras on par with the first.
Movie Quotes
Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Humphrey Bogart Casablanca
