Review

Few television shows have created such a following as "Twin Peaks" other then maybe "Star Trek". The series was so off the wall, with direct supervision from creators David Lynch and Mark Frost that viewers tuned in every week to see where the series would lead. The cast, lead by Kyle MacLachlan as FBI agent Dale Cooper was unreal. Piper Laurie, Michael Ontkean, Peggy Lipton, Madchen Amick, Everett McGill, Sherilynn Fenn, Ray Wise, Richard Beymer and of course Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer.
This DVD set covers a lot of ground for fans. Besides all 29 episodes and two pilots (one is the international version with 15 minutes of extra footage and a conclusion) we get a whole disc of extras not previously released. Commentary from previous disc sets is NOT included so you may want to hold on to the Artisan Season One set and the Season Two box sets if those commentaries are important to you.

Picture and Sound

The picture was digitally remastered from the original negatives and supervised by David Lynch. The series never looked so good as digital enhancements make colors pop and recreates the original atmosphere of the show. The soundtrack was also redone in 5.1 but the disc also contains the original 2.0 soundtrack. Lynch also oversaw the remix to 5.1.

Extras

The disc of extras included in this set contains a enormous amount of information about the series, leading off with a 30 minute sit down chat with Lynch and cast members Kyle MacLachlan, Madchen Amick, and sound man John Wentworth. The real meat of this disc is the long documentary , "Secrets from Another Place" narrated by Mark Frost that includes contributions by many cast members and production crew. Frost tells a chronological tale of the series and even admits that he and Lynch dropped interest in the series into season two. They came back at the end of the season but by then it was too late. All aspects of the show's production are covered, including filming in Washington State, creating the music (which helped create the eerie atmosphere of the show), the unusual sets (the White Lodge), the production barn of sets in California, and dropped plot lines. It is a Twin Peaks fan dream, full of tidbits never disclosed before about the show. Other features included in the set and spread throughout the discs are "Return To Twin Peaks", which follows fans and cast members to a 2006 Twin Peaks Festival, Kyle MacLachlan's Twin Peaks skit on Saturday Night Live, an interactive map of Twin Peaks locations and how to find them in real life, all the Log Lady introductions, although the video quality is poor, the "Falling" music video from Julee Cruise, plus deleted scenes, and ads and promos for the show.

Summary

This set is a must for all Twin Peaks Fans, even if you own the other sets. The etras alone are worth the price of the set. You get remastered picture and sound, and an entire disc of exclusive extras produced for this set with David Lynch and Mark Frost's participation. While it lacks the commentaries from the other sets, this is still a great set for "Peaks Phreaks".

Blues Brothers - 25th Anniversary Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
The original theatrical cut of "The Blues Brothers" is a prime example of the Hollywood mind-set that if you sometimes throw enough money at a potentially dead-in-the-water project, you can shove it down the public's throat by bombarding them so much with over-the-top spectacle that they'll forgive the fact you never had much of a movie to begin with. I think even the staunchest "Blues Brothers" fan has to honestly admit the movie is way too long, is seldom gut-achingly funny, often substitutes rampant destruction, distracting cameos & clumsily-inserted fantasy elements to gloss over a story that has no business being padded out to a 128 minute movie. All of which makes "The Blues Brothers" an anomaly. By all rights, the movie should have suffered the same fate as countless other "Saturday Night Live" sketches adapted for the big screen, playing for a week or two in theaters before everyone caught on to the fact it's yet another expensive product made to cash-in on the public's familiarity with its characters. Instead, it's a modern classic every self-respecting guy knows by heart. Sure, the movie's an awkwardly-paced exercise in cinematic overkill, but just try to find somebody who can honest tell you they don't have a soft spot in their heart for it, or at least pause just a bit longer to catch a few minutes when it pops up while channel surfing. I'm still at a loss as to why it's so revered. Of more personal importance, I'M at a loss as to why I love this movie, for it still represents everything wrong with the movie business (even after 25 years). In all my years of movie-going, "The Blues Brothers" is the only film that I can honestly admit I can't effectively explain why it works...it just does. Despite its overlength, with scenes that could have easily been edited out without anyone missing them, I'd be hard-pressed to tell you which of those scenes I could live without.
