Review

Rosario (Kate del Castillo, TRADE), a young mother, works hard in Los Angeles, hoping to earn enough to afford the papers what would allow her son, Carlitos (Adrian Alonso, THE LEGEND OF ZORRO), to join her in the states. During their Sunday phone calls, she describes in detail the city around her, where she lives, the Laundromat where she washes her clothes and the party store with the mural on the wall. Carlitos already imagines that he is there with his mother. But Rosario is still a long ways away from earning the money needed to pay the lawyer who will help her bring her son to the US. And Carlitos’ grandmother is increasingly ill every day.


Carlitos spends time after school assisting Dona Carmen, a woman who arranges crossings. When Carlitos wakes one morning to find his grandmother has passed, he thinks of the two young Americans (“UGLY BETTY”’s America Ferrera and QUINCEANERA’s Jesse Garcia) that offered their services helping Carmen take babies across. If Carmen doesn’t want the “green mango Chicanos” helping her, and won’t help him to get across to his mother, perhaps he can strike a deal.

But Carlitos’ crossing gets off to a rocky start when the American students’ car is impounded at the border for unpaid parking tickets, and Carlitos – stowed away in a compartment under the seats – is taken away with the car. Meanwhile, Rosario faces a suitor with a proposition and struggles to find additional work when she is let go from one of her jobs. Carlitos hooks up with Enrique (Eugenio Derbez, PADRE NUESTRO) another illegal who begrudgingly allows the boy to tag along. As mother and son struggle to find a way to one another, they take comfort from the fact that although they may be apart, they are still UNDER THE SAME MOON.
