Review

This thriller comes back in a special edition it richly deserves. With a cast of classy "suspects", this film is among the most admired in the last ten years by critics and fans alike. Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollack, and Kevin Spacey are the "suspects" in an intricate and thoroughly entertaining mystery which keeps you guessing until the very last minute of the film.
Five hoods are rounded up at the beginning of the film and soon band together to do a job for a mysterious and legendary underworld kingpin named Keyser Soze. Working through his lawyer (Pete Postelwaite) the crooks are to rob a freighter of its cargo of cocaine for a big haul. Little do they or the audience know that there is much more to the simple heist than any of them imagine. Brilliantly directed by Bryan Singer, the film garnered an Oscar for Spacey in a best supporting actor category, and has gone on to win numerous other awards for its clever and witty script. It is a modern classic that belongs in every film lovers library.

Picture and Sound

Picture-A new high definition transfer is featured on the DVD and it never looked better. The atmosphere created for the film by director Singer and photographer Newton Thomas Sigel bring home the many significant scenes and make "looking for the clues" that much more enjoyable. Sound-A new 5.1 Dolby digital soundtrack is also included on this special edition disc, which is vast improvement over the original DVD. The sound mix captures the films original brilliance, making it a more theater like experience for home viewers.

Extras

The disc is loaded for this special film, as it should be. Deleted scenes are introduced by John Ottman (the producer) and there are a number of featurettes for the film making this disc a joy to view. "Pursuing the Suspects" centers on the cast members and how they got their roles. "Keyser Soze-Lie or Legend" discusses the aspect of the main mysterious character in the film, not seen until the end of the film. " Doing Time With the Suspects" includes interviews with cast members about their roles during the production and how they brought their own unique talents to their roles. An original featurette for the DVD, "Heisting Cannes with the Usual Suspects" is home movie footage of the cast during the Cannes Film Festival. A gag reel with an introduction by director Singer is included on the DVD, along with two audio commentaries to choose from: One with Singer and Christopher McQuarrie (writer) and another with producer John Ottman. There are Easter Eggs, television spots, and theatrical trailers in the special features section of the disc.

Summary

You owe it to yourself to grab this DVD, as it not only brings new life to a great film with its new high definition transfer and sound mix, but also for the many special features included on the disc. If you own the original DVD, you know how good the film is and this special edition is a loving tribute for its entertainment value. The film is one that stands up to repeat viewing on many levels and is perfect for DVD.
