Lorenzo de Lamberti (Hayden Christensen, JUMPER) is a kind of lovable Lothario wooing women in 14th century Florence. But one woman remains beyond his reach: the beautiful and rich Pampinea (Mischa Barton, “THE O.C.”). After the plague takes both of Pampinea’s parents, she is pursued by both a Russian count (Matthew Rhys, “BROTHERS AND SISTERS”) to whom her father betrothed her before his death, and Gerbino dela Ratta (Tim Roth, FUNNY GAMES U.S.), a nefarious nobleman who wants Pampinea and will not take no for an answer. Christopher Egan (ERAGON) and Rupert Friend (MRS. PALFREY AT THE CLAREMONT) also appear.
If you’re looking at the cast and thinking, “Why haven’t I heard of this film before?”, you’re not alone. This straight-to-DVD release should start any red flag warning bells screaming. The film is tonally all over the place, unable to settle on screwball sex comedy, historical costume drama, or romance, or even to find a coherent blend somewhere in between. An actor of Roth’s stature almost lends the film some credibility, until Mischa Barton steps on screen and sends the whole thing down the proverbial toilet. Christensen occasionally has the decency to, at times, appear embarrassed for taking part. It’s a very pretty picture of very pretty people. Roaming from the Florentine metropolis to the Italian countryside, VIRGIN TERRITORY spreads the stories of Boccaccio’s “Decameron” paper-thin until they read more like a Harlequin Historical Romance novel.
Picture and Sound
Picture and sound are average, clean and clear enough.
Extras
* Behind the Scenes of VIRGIN TERRITORY. A lackluster making-of featurette.
* Censored Scenes of Sexuality. Four minutes of footage that is labeled as “sexually contentious” material by the MPAA. Other than a moment of female full-frontal nudity that appears, there’s nothing contained here that’s in any way more explicit than what already appears within the R-rated film.
* David Walliams: Cart Pusher. This is a very, very slightly extended scene of the guy who pushes his dead friend on a cart. There’s about 30 seconds of opening footage to the scene that isn’t included in the film, and then you get the whole scene you’ve already seen.
* Trailer. Interestingly, this isn’t the trailer that I’ve seen anywhere online. Perhaps the European trailer? And it should be red-banded, but isn’t.
* Roberto Cavalli Costume Designs. A gallery of 47 design stills.

"Fear Factor" is sort of the bastard son of "Survivor," but is far less pretentious, making no bones about what it really is...an exploitative game show, with no aspirations other than to make the viewer ponder whether or not the stunts these contestants are required to perform are worth $50,000 (the cash prize awarded to the winner). Asking yourself if you're willing to eat bugs, traverse great heights or be mauled by attack dogs is part of what makes the show so fun, just like you used to do with your buddies when you'd ask dumb stuff like "Would you eat puke for a thousand bucks?" What ultimately makes "Fear Factor" a more rewarding viewing experience than the melodramatic "Survivor" is that each episode is self-contained. There's no waiting until next week to see what happens. With each episode, you're introduced to six contestants, and an hour later, there's a winner.
