Review
I was first introduced to Wallace and Gromit while in my son's Dr.'s office, which had one of the videos playing. I found it to be hilarious for adults as well as kids and this compilation is a gem. Claymation is an art form in itself and when done properly it is engaging and most enjoyable, as this one is. Nick Park started out at an early age and this disc also includes those early works. This DVD includes the only three Wallace and Gromit shorts made, which is a shame. After seeing this disc, you'll want more. Each adventure, about 30 minutes in length, have chapter stops and access to the extra feature on the disc.
The first adventure, A Grand Day Out is about Wallace's quest for cheese. He is an inventor and when he finds no cheese in the house, he builds a rocket to take him to the moon because everyone knows the moon is made of cheese. With Gromit, his silent yet highly intelligent dog at the controls, they land on the moon and begin to test the Moon's different varieties of cheeses. They encounter a vending machine that has a distinct personality all its own and has a protective duty for the Moon's surface. In "The Wrong Trousers", Wallace invents a pairs of mechanical pants to help him do work but soon the pants are being controlled by a mysterious boarder, a penguin disguised a chicken, who has criminal intentions. This one is hilarious from start to finish. The last adventure, " A Close Shave", has Wallace falling head over heels for a wool shop matron, who unfortunately is being controlled by her dog, Preston. He is rustling sheep for their wool and uses Wallace's Knit-O-Matic machine for sinister purposes.
Picture and Sound
Picture- All of the adventures are fullscreen (1:33.1) and look very clean and sharp. Color balance is excellent as well. The prints used for this disc are first class and show no signs of dirt or scratches. A wonderful disc in picture quality. Sound-The Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround sound is also well done by Fox. All the dialog is clear and crisp and the English accents are easy to interpret and understand.
Extras
Besides chapter stops in each adventure, the disc includes 4 of Nick Park's early Claymation works, which show his techniques and humor at an early age. The quality of these is very amateur, with out of focus scenes, and varying lighting. Other extras include an excerpt from Inside the Wrong Trousers a making of featurette, and BBC Christmas Interstitials. All of these extras are accessed from the menu of each adventure. A good design feature of this disc.
Summary
This disc is a great sampling of this British artist work before he hit the "big time". It is entertaining stuff for the whole family, although some English phrases may have to be explained to smaller children. A first class transfer to DVD, excellent sound, and lots of extras make this disc an excellent choice for purchase to animation fans and is also wholesome family entertainment .
