Review

Season Two of this Emmy award winning show is a top notch political drama at its finest. The remarkable cast includes Martin Sheen as President Bartlett, Allison Janey as his press secretary, John Spencer as his Chief of Staff, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford and Rob Lowe as his political strategists, Stockard Channing as his wife and Dule Hill as his personal aide. Created by Aaron Sorkin, this series has won a ton of Emmys and has been the darling of intelligent television viewing for many seasons.
This season starts out with the aftermath of the cliffhanger from Season One, in which President Bartlett (Martin Sheen) is whisked away in his limo after an assassination attempt. Besides dealing with that crisis, the President also must deal with issues such as midterm elections, a relationship between his daughter and his personal aide, political unrest in Haiti, the AIDS epidemic in Africa, and the discovery of his illness (he has MS) which he has kept a secret and could affect his re-election bid. It is gripping television drama with just the right amount of humor that makes each episode a joy to watch.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen picture enhances the action in the White House and makes the custom built sets totally believable. The digital transfer is excellent in detail and contrast, better than the NBC broadcasts. Sound is Dolby surround-could have been 5.1 but with this kind of drama it is sufficient. I did have to adjust volume levels in some low level dialog scenes.

Extras

The disc set has all 22 episodes of season two on double sided discs and an extras disc. There is commentary on four key episodes sprinkled throughout the disc set. The extras disc includes a "making of Season Two featurette, a gag reel, and deleted scenes. A nice package that will keep you amused long after watching the series.

Summary

Emmy and Globe winning Second Season is a must have for series fans. The dramas are acted well by the comfortable ensemble cast and the discs are presented in a slick package with a large amount of extras. Guaranteed good viewing in this election year.
