Review
This excellent comedy-drama is an acting tour-de-force for the ensemble cast that includes Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester, John Williams, Tyrone Powers, and Marlene Dietrich. The film is based on a story and play by mystery writer Agatha Christie. Wilder not only directed this classic film but also co-wrote the screenplay with Harry Kurnitz.
The ailing Charles Laughton is recruited out of a sick bed to take on the case of a married man (Tyrone Power) accused of murdering a widow for her money. His only alibi is his wife, who has secrets to tell of her own. Set in London, the film takes place mostly in the English courtroom with a few side scenes to Laughton's offices and his gathering of information. Laughton and Lanchester (married) have great fun with their parts, sparing constantly as patient and nursemaid. Laughton relishes when he manages to sneak a cigar against his doctors orders, and she enjoys finding his stash hidden in his cane. Power also gives the performance of his career as Leonard Vole, the suave yet seemingly innocent victim of circumstance. Dietrich is her calm cool self, with many surprises in store for the audience.
Picture and Sound
Picture-A somewhat widescreen picture (1.66:1), the black and white image is clear and sharp but suffers from strobing when clothing on the actors exhibits close patterns or stripes. A few scratches and dust spots are present but overall the film is in very good shape. Contrast of the image is overall very good, with rich blacks and tones of gray. Sound-Dolby digital cleans up the mono soundtrack eliminating hiss and pops but it is less than spectacular. Dialog is clear and no biting harshness in the soundtrack is noticeable.
Extras
A theatrical trailer.
Summary
A very well acted film, "Witness For The Prosecution" is a classic with excellent performances by the cast and brilliant directing by Wilder. An entertaining film to own and enjoy again and again.

"Colored people on TV!" As a child growing up in a black neighborhood in the late 60s, if someone knew a black entertainer or group was appearing on television, word spread quickly and all the kids would gleefully scamper inside to marvel at the rare site of Negroes on their family's 12 inch black and white televisions. Clean cut and statuesque, the likes of Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, and even The Jackson 5 had us squealing and talking about the performances for days. My anticipation at the start of the movie "Dreamgirls" evoked this nostalgic look at how black singers and musicians were first experienced by many in pre-civil rights America. Now more glamorous, colorful, and full of finger-popping and hip swinging, this musical's modern movie version gives us some insight into the struggles of blacks breaking into the music industry. The experiences of some of Detroit's most talented gives us the opportunity to be informed while being entertained, but just like the musical "West Side Story" provided insight into racial and class conflict...well, it's only a musical and sort of fluffy and I guess that's why I'm reviewing this disc instead of the regular guy.

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. George C Scott Patton
