Review

"Wordplay"? How boring...no way will I watch that! If this is the first thought that entered your mind you will be sorely mistaken. This stylistic documentary on nothing less then the World Series of crossword puzzles, or the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, is richly entertaining. From the cameo's of William Jefferson Clinton & Jon Stewart, to the personal one on one interviews of the crossword champions, I was riveted to my seat from just how much effort goes into a single crossword puzzle.
The guru of crossword puzzles, Will Shortz, has been putting on the tourney for over a quarter of a century. Not only is Mr. Shortz the editor of the "New York Times Crossword" he also co-hosts a show on National Public Radio. This word magician is not the only focus of this fantastic movie. In the same vein as Jeffrey Blitz's "Spellbound," you follow the ups and downs of competitive crossword puzzling.

Picture and Sound

The film is presented in matted widescreen, and it's a good quality image, with a slight grittiness of a well made documentary. The sound, rendered in 5.1 Dolby Digital is on par with any new DVD out there today.

Extras

Loaded, including commentaries by director Patrick Creadon, Shortz & crossword creator Merl Reagle. Also included are deleted scenes, a music video (!), interviews and a featurette called, "The 5 Unforgettable Puzzles Ever." Even a gift is included inside, a packet of New York Times Crosswords. Along with more puzzles from your computer drive, you will be puzzled out by the time you're done with this disc.

Summary

This movie makes you want to go out and buy a book on crossword puzzles, even if you're not good at them. You come away from this movie loving the expertise of crossword gamers everywhere. A must have for anyone who likes documentaries. Recommended.
