Review
This latest edition to the Bond series is definitely different as our hero shows a new emotional side to his work. Pierce Brosnan, in his third outing as 007 gets hurt and shows it, both physically and mentally. This adds some dimensions to a classic character that we have not seen before.
Bond is assigned to protect an oil heiress whose father was the victim of a bomb and who is a family friend of M's(Judi Densch). Of course, Bond beds her but also becomes emotionally involved. While he protects her, his investigation concentrates on Renard(Robert Carlyle), the man who had kidnapped her, and has a bullet in his head which will eventually kill him but makes him impervious to pain. Bond also meets another babe Christmas Jones (Denise RIchards), a local scientist working for the oil company and also plays hard to get games with Bond (at least for a while). Of course, what would a Bond picture be without spectacular stunts and this is no exception. A para-hawk attack in the mountains is followed by a buzzsaw helicopter attack on a caviar factory are highlights of the action. A chase through the oil pipeline with Richards trying to defuse a bomb also is offers high speed excitement.
Picture and Sound
Picture- A widescreen theatrical presentation (enhanced for widescreen televisions) is the way the picture is presented on the disc. The picture is sharp and color is well balanced. The film was transferred well from MGM. No artifacts were noticeable and it shows off the DVD format well. Sound-Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 are options available. The 5.1 sound is well mixed for effects and explosions and those with a 5 channel system will not be disappointed. Of course , dialog is centered in front center channel, with a good mix of front and back channels for music and sound effects. I never get tired of hearing that Bond theme.
Extras
Like most of the discs in this second Bond batch from MGM, this disc includes a lot of extras. Audio commentary from director Apted and an additional audio track from production designer Peter Lamont, second unit director Vic Armstrong, and composer David Arnold bring insights into the making of the film. Alternative video options are available during the viewing whenever a 007 logo appears on the screen. There is a music video by Garbage, a theatrical trailer and a collectible booklet with even more insights about the film. Absent is the video tribute to Q, Desmond Llewelyn, which is included on other discs in different region releases of this disc..
Summary
The Bond series never gets tiring when done right. Brosnan has done a tremendous job as Bond, bringing new life to a classic character. This disc, while a bit overpriced, is entertaining and comes with a lot of extras while bringing a high quality video presentation to home theaters. I will miss Q. (No pun intended).
