Review
Agents Scully and Mulder tackle the unknown in Season Two of the award winning sci-fi television phenomena X-Files. In this season we see an expanding role for the "cigarette man", and also the FBI's assistant director. We see the replacement for "Deep Throat", who was killed off at the end of the first season as well. This is a strong package with 25 episodes with many memorable scenes for fans to enjoy.
Each of the seven disc set contains 4 episodes, except the last disc, which contains the last "cliffhanger" episode", and the extras contained with the set. The last disc's episode also contains some seamless branching adding some cut scenes into the show. The second season line up has the following episodes: Disc One Little Green Men-Scully's sister is abducted in this one The Host-Fluke Worm Man Blood-In which a small town turns into maniac killers Sleepless-Army Intelligence experiment gone beserk-contains an alternate sequence Disc Two Duane Barry-Steve Railsback in a memorable performance as an ordinary guy abducted and experimented on by aliens Ascension-Scully is taken by Duane and is also experimented on by the aliens 3-Contains a deleted scene One Breathe-additional language tracks in Japanese, German, Italian, and Castillian Spanish Disc Three Firewalker Red Museum Exelsius Dei Aubrey Disc Four Irresistible-Shape shifting serial killer-additional language tracks in Japanese, German, Italian, and Castillian Spanish Die Hand Die Verletzt-Devil worshipping PTA members Fresh Bones Colony-Mulder meets his long lost sister-or does he? Emasculata Soft Light Our Town Disc Seven Anasazi-The death of Mulder's father and a cliffhanger at the end making us get ready for Set Three. Extra features
Picture and Sound
Picture-While the fullscreen picture is sharp as a tack, I found the colors were a bit heavy in magenta tinting, and you may have to adjust the color of your television for more natural looking fleshtones. Other than that, the transfer is quite good, as was Season One. It looks better on DVD than it could ever through cable or broadcast. Sound-Like Season One, a Dolby digital surround stereo soundtrack is on the discs, with a full rich sound with excellent separation for a television show. High marks for the sound, even though their is no 5.1 option.
Extras
Besides what has already been mentioned regarding individual episodes, there are many extras on disc seven including series creator Chris Carter talking about his favorite episodes of the season (about three minutes for each episode), and a 15 minute featurette about Season Two, including some cast members (no Scully or Mulder though). Directors, writers and producers give great insight into the second season with intriguing bits all fans of the series will enjoy hearing. The extras also contain television spots for many of the episodes in one minute, 10 and 20 second promos. There is also a DVD-ROM game included for PCers called "Unholy Alliance."
Summary
This second set is a very strong episode package with lots of character development of the essential players in the "X-Files", and we are once again teased by the writers as to what we really saw or think we saw. That is one of the things that makes X-Files such a hit; we end up talking about it the next day at the water cooler. These episodes will leave you talking once again. All fans will enjoy the great technical quality of these discs. Another great set from Fox Home Entertainment.
