Review

“A Christmas Story” is a timeless classic.

At this point, virtually every person alive knows the plot of “A Christmas Story,” so there’s no point in me explaining it. Besides, the plot is mostly inconsequential as this is very much a character driven holiday film. The Parker family is arguably the most loveable family in cinematic history. Who doesn’t love Randy’s refusal to eat, the caring and sweet Mrs. Parker, the nerdy, Red Ryder loving Ralphie, or the semi-grouchy, jibberish spouting Mr. Parker? Within seconds of seeing the characters, you just feel like you know them so well. They seem like real people and that is what makes “A Christmas Story” a timeless classic. I’ve seen it a countless number of times over the past 20 years and it simply never gets old. It always manages to warm my heart and put a smile on my face. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it is endlessly quotable. Not a month goes by where I don’t find myself uttering a quote such as “Oh fudge,” “You’ll shoot your eye out,” “Football? What’s a football?” etc.

The 1.85:1 1080p picture quality is the same as the HD DVD transfer basically, which is to say not all that great. The picture tends to be grainy and the colors do not look very sharp. However, certain scenes do look great such as the snowy exterior shots.

Sadly, this Blu-ray disc only contains a Dolby Digital 1.0 audio track. It would have been nice to see a better track, but it still is decent enough. The dialogue and score sounded clear throughout.

* Theatrical trailer and leg lamp spot.
* Script pages of a cut scene.
* “Get A Leg Up” (4:30)- An amusing interview with the creator of the leg lamp.
* “Daisy Red Ryder: A History”- A quick 5 minute featurette about the history of the Red Ryder gun.
* “Another Christmas Story” is a fun 18 minute featurette which contains interviews with the cast members talking about Christmas memories, the impact the film has had on their lives, shooting experiences, etc.
* Commentary by Bob Clark and Peter Billingsley. An absolute must listen for “Christmas Story” junkies wanting to get some neat behind-the-scenes facts.

Summary: If you already own the DVD, there isn't much use in upgrading to Blu-ray as the disc itself is not amazing by any means. If you don't yet own "A Christmas Story," however, it is an absolute must buy and an essential for any film collection.

Youth Without Youth

Category: HD Reviews
Francis Ford Coppola's first film in a decade is a strange blend of magical romanticism and a tale of lost opportunities. Tim Roth plays Dominic Matei, a 79 year old university professor who regrets a lot in his life, including the loss of his fiance (Alexandra Maria Lara). While crossing the street on Easter day in 1938, he is struck by lightning and while in the hospital, makes a miraculous recovery in record time. He not only recovers but begins to age backwards and is taken in by his Dr. (Bruno Ganz) to help him cope with his new found abilities and youth. He soon discovers he has developed other abilities beyond growing younger; he can absorb all the knowledge of a book just by touching it, and his mental powers help him defend himself against the Nazis, that have invaded his native Romania. He still reflects onhis most regrettable mistake, the loss of his one true love from his first youth and one day finds a woman identical to her ,whose jeep is struck by lightning on a remote mountain road. When she is found, she is speaking an ancient language. Any more would be a spoiler.
