“Afro Samurai” is a waste of talent.
The logline: Afro Samurai (the #2 Samurai) hunts down his father’s murderer (the #1 Samurai named Justice). Along the way, he encounters all sorts of foes (ranging from Brothers to robots) whom are trying to defeat the Samurai to become the #2 Samurai themselves. This Blu-ray disc contains all 5 episodes from the first season. Looking at the credits, you would think that with all of the talent involved in this production that it would be a surefire hit. After all, you can’t go wrong with voice actors Samuel L. Jackson, Ron Perlman (of “Hellboy” fame), Phil LaMarr with a score by RZA, right? I wish I could say right, but alas I cannot. “Afro Samurai” is an extremely tedious, unoriginal, and violent affair that borrows heavily from recent superior genre classics like “Kill Bill,” “Samurai Jack” and “Samurai Champloo.” The script simply does not have enough meat to it, nor does it have much in the way of character. Afro himself barely speaks a word. His Jar Jar like sidekick Ninja Ninja (also voiced by Sam Jackson) is incredibly annoying and does all the talking in the series without managing to say much at all. As for the story, I was hoping for something more than a straight forward revenge tale with the occasional flashback to Afro’s childhood/teen years. Perhaps season two will be more complex, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. As for the animation, it is hit-and-miss. My main beef with the animation is that some of the actions (and character models) are not fluid at all and look rather jerky. Of course, this is not the case for every character and motion on screen, but it’s still a problem regardless. On the plus side, I will say the animation is very distinct and stylized and can look rather pleasant at times.
Picture and Sound
Make no mistake about it, animation in widescreen 1080P looks stunning. The picture quality simply looks as sharp as nails. There are no picture issues whatsoever. Hopefully, more animated films and series will come to Blu-ray soon.
The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track is clear, but there are a few moments where the score overpowers the dialogue.

The story: Max Walker is an officer whose job is to control illegal time travel. When Max learns that Senator McComb, who happens to be running for president, is using time travel, he tries to stop him. Why is McComb using time travel? Did McComb affect Max's life somehow? Tune in and find out. Having seen several Jean-Claude Van Damme films, I can honestly say that "Timecop" is a cut above most of his work. In addition to having some enjoyable beatdowns on the mullet sporting henchmen, there are some fun sci-fi moments here such as the trips to the civil war and the depression era, Van Damme emerging into the past in front of a truck, Van Damme meeting himself in the past, etc. Of course, "Timecop" could have been a better film under a more capable director and screenwriter. My main problem with the flick is that it never delivers what it promises. If you have a story about time travel, show Van Damme going to various time periods! Is that so much to ask? In addition, the movie could have starred a better actor. Sorry to say, but Van Damme's acting is wooden. Don't believe me? Observe his line deliveries and his utter lack of chemistry with any cast member. The widescreen picture quality is solid overall. The color could have been sharper and I did spot a few dirt specs, but the print looks better than anyone could have imagined. The English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is equally impressive. No extras.
