Review

It's hard to imagine, but "Aliens Vs. Predator- Requiem" is even worse than AVP.

The plot: A Predator must battle aliens and an alien/predator hybrid in a tiny Colorado town.

The story may sound fun on paper, but alas there is nothng fun about "Aliens. Vs. Predator- Requiem." I don't know how they managed to do it again, but Fox has messed up yet another simple Vs. film. The writers and director they are hiring clearly don't understand how to make this concept work. There have been countless successful and popular books and comics regarding "Alien Vs. Predator," but apparently no one at Fox has read those.

The main problem as I see it is that everyone involved in these two AVP films seems to have forgotten what made the "Alien" franchise and "Predator" such a hit. First and foremost, the characters were memorable. Who can forget Ripley or Ahnuld? In AVP-R, the word character is apparently foreign as everyone in the film is about as lively as a cardboard cut out. Secondly, the predators and aliens are meant to be scary and threatening and should not be in so many scenes. When you focus on the aliens and predator too much, they become less mysterious and lose their appeal. Also, I'm sorry to say this, but the hybrid "Predalien" as it is called, might be one of the worst costumes of the decade. Whoever thougt that would be a good idea (let alone a "scary creature") should be ashamed.

Picture and Sound

The 2.40:1 widescreen picture quality is undeniably sharp, but I just wish the film had better cinematograpy and lighting. It would have been nice to actually SEE the fights and so forth in a clearer light.

The DTS HD 5.1 lossless audio track is impressive throughout. The dialogue is clear and the alien and predator sounds are very audible and distinct.

* Commentary by the Strause Brothers and John Davis- The three jabber on about cut ideas, shooting, casting, etc.

* "Preparing For War: The Making Of AVP-R" is a 16 minute featurette that contains info. about script drafts, what goes on behind-the-scenes, etc.
* "Fight To The Finish: Post-Production" is a 12 minute featurette on editing and completing the f/x.
* "Crossbreed: Creating The Predalien" is an 8 1/2 minute featurette on the worst hybrid alien ever.
* "Building The Predator Homeworld" is a 6 1/2 minute extra on the designs, f/x of the planet.
