The plot: Kate is a single woman who makes a comfortable living. Still, all is not well in Kate’s life. As she nears the age of 40, she feels it is time to have a child. As she is seemingly unable to get pregnant, however, she hires a surrogate mother. Unfortunately, the surrogate mother (Angie) is a loud mouth, crude, lazy woman who often clashes with Kate, especially when they wind up moving in together. Naturally, all sorts of crazy shenanigans ensue!

“Baby Mama” is the type of comedy I despise the most. It’s a safe Hollywood vehicle that takes no risks whatsoever. True, there are plenty of delightful cutesy predictable Hollywood films, but this is not one of them. The problem is there is nothing really humorous here aside from a small role by Steve Martin who plays a hippie President of a natural foods company. Most of the “humor” is meant to come from Amy Poehler’s character. Truthfully, I never cared for anything Poehler has done. She tries way too hard to be funny at times and I find her constant yelling and screaming downright irritating. My opinion of her certainly didn’t change here as she manages to be louder and more annoying than ever. As for Tina Fey (AKA Sarah Palin), she walks through this film. My guess is she only took on this film to reunite with “Saturday Night Live” folks and to pick up a big fat check.

Summary: “Baby Mama” is a painfully unfunny comedy that should be avoided.
