Exclusive HD Extras: Finally, a Blu-ray disc with tons of exclusives! Here's the rundown of what to expect:

* A 6 1/2 minute featurette titled "Booker T And The Michel Gondry."
* A 5 minute bonus feature in which Jack And Mos improvise songs for films.
* A random, but comedic 6 minute conversation between Jack Black and Michel Gondry.
* "Fats Was Born Here" is the complete 11 1/2 minute film made on Fats that is featured in "Be Kind Rewind."
* A 33 1/2 minute making of in which we see behind-the-scenes footage of Gondry directing and talking about his vision for the film.
* "Mos Def, Michel Gondry, and Jean-Michael Bernard Live! Tribute To Fats Waller" is a 6 minute concert.

Review

"Be Kind Rewind" is a wasted opportunity by director Michel Gondry.

The story: After Jerry accidentally magnetizes all of the VHS tapes at a friend’s video store, he and video store employee Mike try and save the store by filming their own versions of films like “Ghostbusters,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Robocop,” etc. Much to their surprise, customers begin flocking to the store to rent the amateur movies. Can the two save the store or will it be shut down?

When I first saw the trailer for “Be Kind Rewind,” I thought this was going to be something special. It looked humorous, charming and had a talented cast and director to boot. Unfortunately, the trailer was completely and utterly misleading. Yes, the amateur film bits are fun to watch, but those scenes are few and far between. Instead, the movie is bogged down by a drawn out sentimental subplot that involves the late jazz pianist Fats Waller. Not only is this story completely out of place, but it’s just not interesting at all (especially when viewers were expecting to see a movie more along the lines of the one in the trailer).

One of my other main issues with the film was Jack Black’s character. What was the purpose of making him appear so dumb? It seemed like Gondry was mocking him throughout most of the film. A poor move on his part.

Overall, “Be Kind Rewind” has its moments, but I can’t help but feel short changed by Gondry dropping the ball and New Line mismarketing the film.

Picture and Sound

The 2.35:1 1080P picture is sharp as nails. The colors are clear as day and you can certainly see a lot more detail in this Blu release.

There's a lot of depth to the top notch 7.1 DTS HD audio track. The music and dialogue sound extemely impressive for a comedic film.

Transformers 2 Disc Special Edition Blu-Ray

When the HD format war was still going on, Michael Bay, the director of this film, made it quite clear he preferred Blu-Ray to the now dead HD-DVD.  Unfortunately Paramount had gone with HD-DVD and Michael Bay was frustrated that his work could not be seen in the format he felt was superior.  The Blu-Ray edition of "Transformers" was watched particularly close when it was released to see if it lived up to the excellent HD-DVD version.  Paramount came through with a very sharp and detailed picture and excellent soundtrack in Dolby HD.
