Review

Lawrence Kasdan's first film is a modern film noir classic that reflects back on the classic genre with bold new direction and dialog.

The steamy scenes between Kathleen Turner and William Hurt were very controversial at the time and we learn through the extras that some of the hottest scenes were filmed the first day of shooting.  Hurt plays a lawyer who gets involved with a wealthy wife of a successful businessman (Richard Crenna) , and much like other films in film noir genre, they plot to murder the husband after a very steamy affair.  Turner was virtually unknown until this film and the film also has early roles by Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke.  Hurt was the only known actor in the film.
Kasdan took great care with the dialog , as that was a big part of film noir, only the language has been updated for a modern audience.

The picture on this blu-ray disc is washed out so much details are lost.  I can not recommend this disc for purchase because of that reason.  If you have the dvd save your money.  However, the film is good.  It's a shame Warner botched this one.

Picture and Sound

The technical aspects of this disc are not very good. Colors and picture are washed out in many scenes and the overall look of the disc is nothing a good upconverter couldn't do. Sound is Dolby True HD in 5.1 and is equally unspectacular. This is a dialog driven film so it doesn't make that much of a difference. However, the picture should be much more detailed. I really wanted to see these actors sweat.

Extras

A lengthy documentary on the making of film involves Lawrence Kasdan (this was his first film) and all the principle actors from the film. Its a tribute to Kasdan that after all this time the actors still remember and fondly recall working on the film.
