Review

The "Bonnie And Clyde" Blu-ray disc is a must have for any film lover's collection.

You know the story. The cocky and rebellious Clyde Barrow brings bored young thrill seeking Bonnie Parker on the ride of her life as they pursue a life of crime during the Depression era. During their crime spree, Bonnie and Clyde not only begin to fall in love with each other, but they must also try to outrun the law. 

Make no mistake about it; “Bonnie And Clyde” is a groundbreaking and realistic tale of violence. Unlike other crime features that preceded the 1967 film, director Arthur Penn did not make the main characters unlikable maniacal sadistic killers. Instead, he makes the audience sympathize with the title characters. True, they were murderers and thieves, but they were also identifiable young lovers who were seeking the American Dream in a hopeless time period. They were the definition of anti-heroes. 

As revolutionary as the film’s material is, however, it’s the cast that brings the story to life. Both Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway have never been better in my opinion. They own the screen from the first to the last frame. The supporting cast (Gene Hackman, Gene Wilder, Michael J. Pollard, and Estelle Parsons) also give career defining performances as each character is both deep and fully developed (a rarity for most films).

Picture and Sound

The 1.85:1 1080P picture is a vast improvement over the recent DVD release. The image looks a lot cleaner and much of the grain has been removed. Another job well done Warner.

The Dolby Digital Stereo track is solid, but there’s only so much you can do with a stereo track. The dialogue and music is clear enough, but I do wish there would have been a better audio track for this Hi-Def release.

* "Revolution! The Making Of Bonnie And Clyde"- A 3 part 65 minute documentary that talks about the cast, costumes, sets, as well as bring up not so well known facts such as how Francois Truffaut was in talks to direct and that Beatty wanted Bob Dylan to star in the film.
* "The History Channel Documentary- Love And Death: The Story Of Bonnie And Clyde"- A 43 minute documentary that shows the real story behind the infamous couple.
