Review

After a string of lackluster sequels ("Shrek 3" ring a bell?), the summer film season was shaping up to be a disappointing one. Then came "The Bourne Ultimatum." Aside from raking in mountains of dough, the third installment of the popular franchise proved to be just what filmgoers were looking for- a thrilling action adventure.
The story: Picking up right after "The Bourne Supremacy," Jason Bourne must once again try to dodge assassins and avoid being detected by CIA security cameras and other gadgets. On top of that, Bourne is determined to uncover his mysterious past. "The Bourne Ultimatum" is little more than a chase film, but it's a damned good one. It's almost impossible not to be on the edge of your seat while watching the riveting motorbike/foot chase and hand-to-hand combat fight in Tangier or the flat-out chaotic car chase in New York. Of course, the success of the film is due largely in part to director Paul Greengrass. He directs the hell out of this film. True, the jerky handheld camera can be a bit bothersome at times, but one can't deny that his gritty, in your face style gets your heart racing. Break neck pacing and kick-ass action aside, I still have issues with the characters. Unlike the James Bond franchise, no one has a suave or lively personality in the Bourne series. Granted, they are entirely different spy franchises, but Jason Bourne himself isn't exactly the most engaging hero. He may know how to beat people to a pulp, but he rarely talks. When he does, he mutters a few words or threatens someone. The rest of the cast also plays cold characters. Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney are unquestionably great actors, but even they have little to do outside of barking/questioning orders or spouting exposition.

Picture and Sound

I'm not going to beat around the bush, "The Bourne Ultimatum" looks and sounds great. The 2.40:1 widescreen picture quality is sharp as a tack. No noticeable amounts of grain, no artifacting, no problems period! Both the English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and English Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio tracks are just as outstanding as the picture quality. When the action kicks into gear, you really feel it. The thundering music, car/motorcycle motors roar into your living room making you feel as if you were in on the chase yourself.

Extras

* 11 1/2 minutes of forgettable deleted scenes including more courtroom and Pamela footage. * "Be Bourne Spy Training"- A quiz game in which you can download your results to the web enabled section. * "Driving School"- 3 minutes of Matt Damon learning some maneuvers. * A behind the scenes of the "New York Chase" (10 1/2 mins.) * "Planning The Punches" (4 1/2 mins.)- The actor who played Desh and Matt Damon practice some martial arts moves. * "Man On The Move: Jason Bourne" (23 1/2 mins.) takes a look at the various locations the crew shot at (Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid, and Tangier). Interviews with producers, camera operators and Matt Damon are included. * "Rooftop Pursuit" (5 1/2 mins.) is a semi in-depth look at how the crew pulled off certain stunts and shots. * Commentary by Paul Greengrass- If you like lots of technical and long winded jabbering in your commentary tracks, you'll like this one. * Exclusive to HD-DVD is a "U-Play" section in which viewers can watch "Picture In Picture" interviews/set footage, 3D visuals/location information via the "Blackbriar Files," and even Volkswagen information.

Summary

You don't need me to tell you that "The Bourne Ultimatum" is worth buying as I'm sure everyone and their mother will be purchasing this disc on DVD and HD-DVD. However, in case you need further convincing, pick this disc up!

Spiderwick Chronicles, The Blu-Ray

Category: HD Reviews

"The Spiderwick Chronicles" is an adaptation of a fantasy series of books compiled into one film, which of course is going to make fans of the books really mad.  Hence, bad reviews.  Since I had not read the books, I looked at this film as a children's book adaptation and nothing more.  While I found some of the story rather formulated in traditional Hollywood style, I also thought the acting was great , the creatures and effects outstanding, and the Blu-Ray version exceptional as eye candy.
