Paul Newman and Robert Redford star in this classic George Roy Hill western, now available in high definition Blu-Ray disc. While the film is sure to be a hit on high def, there are a few flies in the oinment unfortunately. The film itself is a classic-I can quote many lines from the film, "You think you used enough dynamite, there Butch?", "I can't swim!", and of course, "Who are those guys?". Watching this film again was a real pleasure and it always has been a favorite for millions of viewers. Look for small but significant parts by Cloris Leachman as a hooker, Kenneth Mars as a frustrated town marshall, Henry Jones as the bike saleman, and Percy Garris, played by none other than Strother Martin-"Bingo!".
The high defintion picture from Fox is MPEG 2@18MBPS which is part of the discs problem. An AVC transfer would have been better choice for picture quality. While you will see improvement in some scenes, especially close-ups of Redford and Newman on the run, the overall picture suffers from some grain, unspectacular colors with a few exceptions and and relativily unspectacular overall appearance. Certain scenes do benefit from the high definition format, such as the cliff jumping scene with high detail in the rocks and water. You can also definitely tell when stunt riders and jumpers were used, something I had not noticed before in the film. Sound is equally unspectacular even though the soundtrack is DTS MA lossless. The 5.1 sound is mostly 3.1 sound with heavy front stage channels and very little info coming through the surround speakers, except for maybe the occasional bullet richochet. Extras include commentary tracks with director George Roy Hill, composer Hal David, CInematographer Conrad Hall and Documentary director Robert Conrad Jr.. A separate commentary track is offered with Wiliam Goldman, screenplay writer.Of course, there is a making of documentary and a featurette about the lives of the real Butch and Sundance. This include interviews with all the major stars of the film; Newman, Redford and Ross and historians of western history. There is a deleted scene without sound but with dialog subtitles which uses the silent film footage from the opening credits as the characters watch in a film tent in Bolivia, right before Etta Place leaves them. Trailers and teasers round out the extras. While I really enjoy this film, as millions do, the Blu-Ray is a bit of a disappointment in picture and sound. I'm used to Fox not including any exclusive extras on there Blu-Ray and what is included is good, just nothing new for this edition. Purists will want this as it is a classic but it will be a hard sell to people who already own the 2 disc dvd special edition.

"The Bourne Supremacy" picks up where the first film left off. Jason Bourne and Marie are still together and are in hiding in India. However, their quiet time together doesn't last long as an assassin catches up with the two and manages to kill Marie. As if matters couldn't get any worse for Bourne, he is framed from a crime he didn't commit. With no other choice, Bourne must grudgingly return to his old ways and find out why he is being set-up for murder While "The Bourne Supremacy" contains a riveting car chase in India and one of the best hand-to-hand combat fights ever filmed, this second installment is sorely lacking in the story department. True, the first 20 minutes are rather eventful, but the majority of this sequel more or less stalls the over arching story. As a result, Bourne has little to do other than run around while being plagued with memory issues.

Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Humphrey Bogart Casablanca
