Review

“Carrie” is an overrated, but decent horror flick.

“Carrie,” which revolves around a shy, telekinetic teenaged girl who gets mercilessly picked on by virtually everyone in her life, has never been a favorite of mine. At the time of its release “Carrie” was considered groundbreaking, but nowadays it’s merely just another “high school is hell” movie. With that said, there is still much to admire. The cast is clearly the highlight here. Sissy Spacek gives one of her finest performances as the awkward teen, as does Piper Laurie as the psycho religious mother. John Travolta and P.J. Soles are also memorable in their small roles as high school hot shots/bullies.

I also have to give props to the script which was written by Lawrence D. Cohen and based off of the Stephen King novel of the same name. The script not alone gives ample screen time to nearly character, but also showcases an identifiable story about accepting people for who they are (and leaving them alone).

The one major flaw that “Carrie” has is the hackneyed direction by Brian DePalma. To me, DePalma always goes overboard and often tries to hard to imitate other directors (namely Alfred Hitchcock). I literally could not stand his lingering shots or his nauseating 360 angles during the dance sequence.

Picture and Sound

The 1.85:1 1080P picture quality resembles that of a poor quality DVD. There is nothing about the PQ that remotely looks Hi-Def. The colors are flat, the print is grainy and the image is even wavy in spots.

The DTS HD 5.1 Lossless audio track is so-so. The dialogue and music sound fine.

Extras

The only extras are trailers for “The Amityville Horror,” “The Terminator,” and “Carrie”.

Tropic Thunder Blu-Ray

Category: HD Reviews
"Tropic Thunder" is one of Ben Stiller's greatest efforts on film to date.  Besides starring in the film, he also co-wrote the screenplay and directed it.  The result is one of the best comedies of the year and this Blu-Ray package is chock full of extras that will tweak your funny bone even more. Stiller also has a brilliant comedy team with him; Jack Black plays a drugged out movie star , famous for fart jokes, Robert Downey Jr. is brilliant as an Australian actor who has undergone pigmentation alteration to play a black American GI, Matthew McConaughey is Stiller's agent in Hollywood, Nick Nolte as the grissled author of the book they are filming, Brandon T Jackson as a young cast member trying to sell his franchised products in the film, Steve Coogan as the embattled director, and an almost unrecognizable Tom Cruise as the obscene head of a fictional studio.
