Review
“Chuck” is not must see TV.
The plot: Chuck, a geeky everyman who works at a Best Buy esuqe store, has his life turned upside down when important government information becomes downloaded into his brain. Now, Chuck finds himself working with the NSA and the CIA to track down bad guys and embark on secret missions.
I realize “Chuck” has its fans, but I am not one of them. To me, the show tries to come off as a modern day, hi-tech version of “Get Smart” mixed with “Jake 2.0,” only this show isn’t remotely funny or “hip.” The problem as I see it is that the show dabbles in far too many genres which never works out for any film/show. Is it a spy show, a comedy, or an action series? The writers don’t know and it’s painfully obvious with each formulaic episode.
Speaking of formulaic, the show is very limited in its premise. Every episode (in the first season at least) finds Chuck somehow getting involved in a dangerous mission and getting into a near death situation only to be rescued by someone. Is it possible to see a variety of stories?
One of my other main issues is that I found Zachary Levi as Chuck to be an obnoxious stereotype rather than a real character. He’s a one note lead actor whose grating persona sadly reminds me of Dane Cook.
About the only compliment I can give this show is that it’s nice to see Adam Baldwin of “Firefly” fame getting work. It’s too bad “Firefly” isn’t still airing instead of this.
Picture and Sound
The 1.78:1 1080p picture quality is somewhat of a mess. Not only does the picture often look fuzzy, but the skin tone colors are definitely off. However, some scenes like the city shots and computer flashes in chuck’s mind look great.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is weak. There really isn’t much life to it. Why can’t Warner spring for a TrueHD track at the very least?

* Nearly 10 minutes of deleted scenes over 3 discs.
* “Chuck Versus The Chuckles” is a goofy 7 minute gag reel.
* “Chuck On Chuck” (27)- Zachary Levi, Joshua Gomez, Chris Fedak, and Josh Schwartz have a laid back, in depth roundtable discussion about several scenes.
* “Chuck’s Online World” (5:30)- A 4 part featurette with the actors in character. We see Jeff introducing himself, Morgan chatting about movie villains, and Anna displaying her karate and sword skills.
