Review
“Doomsday” is a brainless action/sci-fi film that is made watchable by a few intense action sequences.
The plot: After a virus outbreak, the country of Scotland becomes quarantined in order to prevent the virus from leaking out. 30 years later, the virus has spread into London which forces government officials to send a rag-tag operative squad into Scotland in order to find a possible cure. Can a cure be found? What sort of madness lies in Scotland? “Doomsday” is not the type of film you are going to watch for plot or characters. The plot is essentially a rip-off of “Escape From New York” and the “Mad Max” series, and the characters are virtually non-existent. The real saving grace of the film is the bloody violence and the over the top action scenes. Action junkies are sure to get a kick out of the massive amounts of gunplay, gadgetry usage, explosions, and one of the most eye-popping car chases in recent memory. What’s even more impressive is that “Doomsday” was somehow made for only 30 million dollars. Seeing as how many costumes, vehicles, and locations there were in this film, it’s downright astonishing. Perhaps more studios should ask Neil Marshall how he managed to accomplish so much with so little. As the characterization is limited, the cast does not have much to do here. Veteran actors Bob Hoskins and David O’Hara naturally give the best performances here as they are never over the top. The worst performances are without a doubt given by Malcolm McDowell and Craig Conway. McDowell is completely out of place here and his character is more or less pointless in the grand scheme of things. Conway, who plays the crazed punk cannibal leader Sol, tries way too hard as he shouts and screams his way through every scene. Overall: “Doomsday” is not for everyone, but action fans might want to consider giving it a rent.
Picture and Sound
The 2.35:1 1080P widescreen picture impresses with stunning clarity. The gore, rain soaked streets, explosions, forests, and action all looked crystal clear to this reviewer. The PQ is so good, in fact, that this will be the first A+ picture rating I will give to a Blu-ray disc.
The DTS HD 5.1 audio track also has a lot going on. The car chase, voice over, dialogue and music are clear throughout. The only main issue I had with the track is that the music tends to overpower the dialogue. Then again, dialogue really doesn’t matter much in this film.
Extras
* Commentary by Neil Marshall, Sean Pertwee, Darren Morfitt, Rick Warden, and Les Simpson. The group talk about their experiences, location shooting, cut footage, etc. For fans only.

Featured Review
"The Spiderwick Chronicles" is an adaptation of a fantasy series of books compiled into one film, which of course is going to make fans of the books really mad. Hence, bad reviews. Since I had not read the books, I looked at this film as a children's book adaptation and nothing more. While I found some of the story rather formulated in traditional Hollywood style, I also thought the acting was great , the creatures and effects outstanding, and the Blu-Ray version exceptional as eye candy.

Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Humphrey Bogart Casablanca
