Review

“Dead Zone” and “The World’s Strongest” are not memorable “Dragon Ball Z" adventures.

The plots: “Dead Zone” finds Garlic Jr. kidnapping Gohan and his Dragon balls in order to become immortal. Now, it’s up to Goku (with the help of Krillin and Piccolo) to rescue Gohan and stop the evil Garlic Jr. and his band of henchmen. In “The World’s Strongest,” Dr. Wheelo is resurrected, but needs a suitable body. Naturally, he has his sights on the strongest person (Goku).

Like several of the DBZ films I have reviewed, these two are light in the story and character department. The films are little more than an excuse for Goku and company to fight and blow stuff up. If you don’t believe me, then watch “World’s Strongest” in which Goku calls upon the world to lend him energy to defeat Wheelo.

Another problem I had was with the weak enemies. Garlic Jr. is an obnoxious power hungry villain and Dr. Wheelo works better on paper than he does on screen.

The two films do have some redeeming qualities. As usual, Piccolo owns every scene he is in and he does get to shine a bit in “Dead Zone.” In ‘Strongest,’ it was nice to see Gohan get angry and show off some strength instead of whining and cringing behind his father.

In conclusion, skip this disc and watch the “Dragon Ball” or “Dragon Ball Z” series instead.

Picture and Sound

Like previous Blu-ray releases, the widescreen 1080P picture quality is uneven. The colors generally look very sharp, but there is quite a bit of dirt and grain.

The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track is clear all around. The voice work, score, and especially the action sounded clear as can be.

Extras

* Trailers for “Vexille,” “Fullmetal Alchemist,” “Glass Fleet,” “Dragonball Z,” “The Galaxy Railways,” “Blue Gender,” “XXXHolic,” and “Ragnarok.”
* Commentary on “Dead Zone” by Chris Cason and Chuck Huber. Much like the commentaries on “Death Note,” this is a pointless track as none of these people actually worked on the series. They simply worked on the voice dubs.
