Review

"The Final Countdown" is a science fiction time travel film from 1980 that has achieved near cult status for sci-fi buffs.  Blue Underground has wisely chosen this film as one of their first Blu-Ray releases in their catalog. The film stars Kirk Douglas as the captain of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz on routine patrol off Hawaii in modern times.  Joining Douglas are James Farentino as a maverick pilot, Martin Sheen as a federal 'observer", Charles Durning as a US Senator, and Katherine Ross as his secretary.

The story is a classic "what if" scenario-the nuclear powered Nimitz is sent through a portal anomoly they encounter at sea and end up off Hawaii on December 6, 1941.  Besides taking on a U.S. Senator and his secretary from that era, the Nimitz also manages to shoot down a Japanese plane on its way to Pearl Harbour.  Of course, the captain (Douglas) must consider how their actions will effect history if they get involved in the fight, and if they do, will they even exist?  It's an interesting plot which will keep you thinking well beyond the film's ending.
The film is also a great show off piece for the Navy, as early scenes feature a lot of the workings of the carrier.
The HD picture is beautiful-sharp, clear and clean.  Although the film is 30 years old, it looks pristine in its presentation.  Not a speck of dirt or scratches is visible. Audio is also enhanced, with DTS HD 7.1, or Dolby True HD 7.1 options.  You really hear those jets roar on take-off.

Extras include commentary by Director of Photography Victor Kemper and there is a  a feature on Associate Producer Lloyd Kaufman. There is also a feature on "The Jolly Rogers F-14 Fighter Squadron " who are featured in the film.

"The Final Countdown" Blu-Ray is a great disc for fans of the film.  You will not be disappointed in the technical aspects of the disc and the enhanced audio make this disc a must have for fans of the film.

Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it
