Review
“Firefly” is simply one of the best science fiction television series.
“Firefly” is a sci-fi western that revolves around a rag-tag crew of thieves on board a spaceship known as Serenity. One day, the crew bring aboard a Doctor who manages to smuggle his slightly crazy sister on board. Little does the crew know that they are wanted and being pursued by the Alliance (the totalitarian authorities). The 14 episode series basically follows the group on their adventures as they take on dangerous jobs and encounter cannibalistic Reavers, the Alliance, and mysterious Blue Sun employees.
Even though this series was short-lived, it is undeniably one of the best sci-fi shows ever. In addition to creating a complex and rich universe, creator Joss Whedon manages to do what he does best yet again- create an amazing cast of characters. Everyone from the Han Solo esque captain Malcolm Reynolds to the adorable mechanic Kaylee are incredibly well written. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that everyone has great chemistry together. You really get a sense of family, which is what Whedon was going for.
The episodes themselves are also equally stunning here. My favorite is the superbly structured “Out Of Gas” which spans several time periods and offers up plenty of backstory and characterization. I’m also a big fan of “Jaynestown,” but then again, who isn’t?
Summary: Even though I have seen every episode several times, I still manage to fall in love with the series all over again when I watch these episodes again. It breaks my heart that this shoe never got a chance, but I am grateful we have this series (and a film). I give this set my highest recommendation, especially if you do not already own “Firefly.”
Picture and Sound
The 1.78:1 1080p widescreen picture is a bit on the grainy side, but the image, space sequences, and F/X are certainly clearer than the DVD release.
The DTS HD 5.1 audio track is leagues better than the DVD audio track. Everything from the memorable music score to the rousing action sequences sound incredible.
