Review

Just as I am starting to see some award worthy 2007 films in theaters, along comes "The Heartbreak Kid (2007)" HD-DVD. Unless watching Carlos Mencia talking about his genitals appeals to you, this film will ruin any cinema fan's good mood.
The story: A lonely bachelor named Eddie gets lucky and winds up falling in love with a gorgeous woman named Lila. Shortly after, the two get married and go on a honeymoon trip to Mexico. While in Mexico, Eddie sees a different side of Lila and is regreting that he married her. Even worse, he winds up falling for another woman (Miranda) he meets. In typical Farrelly Brothers fashion, chaos ensues. While the message of never finding one true love is intriguing, that's the extent of this film's appeal as "The Heartbreak Kid" is yet another disasterous re-make. While the original (written by the great Neil Simon) was a skillfully done dark comedy, the re-make is more concerned with homophobic and racist humor (see the end border crossing scene). How is that exactly funny? The cast is also another problem. It doesn't get much worse than Carlos Mencia and Ben Stiller. Granted, Stiller has had a few memorable performances ("The Cable Guy" and "The Royal Tenenbaums"), but overall he plays the same schtick in every film. How many "average joe gets into a series of unfortunate events with women" characters can he play? Plus, it doesn't help that he has zero chemistry with any of the leading ladies (Michelle Monaghan and Malin Akerman). The only remotely likeable actor here is Rob Corddry of "The Daily Show" and "The Winner" fame. This guy needs better roles. The real tragedy of "The Heartbreak Kid" is the Farrelly Brothers. They once ruled the box office with classic comedies like "Dumb And Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary," but they quickly churned out forgettable flicks like "Me, Myself, And Irene" and "Shallow Hal." Will they ever return to their former glory?

Picture and Sound

Once again, the widescreen picture quality is clear, but it doesn't quite reach hi-def standards. It looks more like a high quality upconverted DVD. Both the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 tracks are solid all around.

Extras

* Theatrical trailer * 6 deleted scenes * A nearly 4 minute gag reel * "The Egg Toss" and "Heartbreak Halloween" are two time-wasting featurettes about the crew having parties. Does anyone really want to watch these? * "Ben And Jerry" looks at Ben and Jerry Stiller working together. * We get the life story of the Farrelly Brothers in the 15 1/2 minute featurette "The Farrelly Bros. In The French Tradition." * A commentary track by the Farrelly Brothers. A pretty routine commentary track with the usual name dropping. They seem more interested in talking about the soundtrack than the actual film.

Summary

"The Heartbreak Kid" is yet another pointless re-make that is inferior in every way to the original. Rent the original instead.

Nicholas Cage stars in this non-stop action flick on Blu-Ray from Disney. Supporting cast members includes John Malkovich, John Cusack, Colm Meaney, a young Dave Chappell and Ving Rhames. Steve Buscemi also makes an appearance as a mass murderer psycho. Buscemi makes the most of his role, at one point escaping to find a little girl playing in a trailer park and comparisons to the floating daisy scene from the original "Frankenstein" are obvious. The plot involves Cage, an Army ranger, who has been wrongfully incarcerated for years for a self-defense murder. He has kept in contact with his wife and daughter and looks forward to getting paroled. Unfortunately he hitches a ride on a prison plane that is taken over by criminal escape artist John Malkovich and company. He is then forced to either go along with the escape plan or let his cellmate, a diabetic, die from lack of insulin. Cusack, who is sympathetic to Cage's plight, gets Cage to stay on board to help defeat Malkovich's plans for escape. Picture quality is excellent in 1080p. The picture quality is what you would expect from a Disney Blu-Ray disc, stunning detail in every scene, with bright vivid colors. Colm Meaney's Corvette never looked better. The soundtrack options are uncompressed 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit), Dolby 5.1 in English, Spanish and French; the soundtrack is outstanding, especially in the action sequences. There are no new extras on this high defnition disc; a disappointment but all the original extras from the standard dvd are offered. The few that are included are A View From Above and The Destruction of Las Vegas plus the theatrical trailer. Extras are offered in 1080p and 480i . Disney is also offering a trade up rebate of $10.00 for the disc if you own it in standard DVD. Details to receive the rebate are enclosed.
